After a quick drive-by tour of several of the area's night spots, we settled on this as it looked like a fun place to spend a Saturday evening. With a band playing outside, we requested seating there and quickly decided to find a seat at the interesting looking bar instead of a table. Lush tropical foliage & a huge ficus tree in the middle of the bar give this place a great atmosphere! The service, though busy, was fairly attendant with a couple of short lapses as we were tucked in corner that seemed easily forgotten. A so-so band played classic rock & popular covers ( please stop trying to hit those high notes! ), and were not so loud as to strain conversation at the opposite end of the patio. We were offered complimentary cajun boiled peanuts, which were surprisingly good. Albeit messy, they were flavorful & spicy, mixed with sliced jalapeno peppers. A high point of the meal.
Food was ok. We have spent a lot of time in the NOLA area, and the menu is not very typical cajun/creole. A freshly baked bread loaf was nice, but served with "buttery spread" rather than butter. This may be a pet-peeve, but I believe that good bread should be served with real butter. My companion chose the Big Easy - mahi topped with crawfish etoufee and cheese. The dish was quite bland and the cheese was a strange addition. When I asked if the chicken was blackened on the Cajun Grilled Chicken Pasta, I was told that it was not, but could be prepared this way. Wanting a flavorful dish, I requested this and was disappointed to find the dish to also be bland, despite the additional seasoning. The sauce was sparse and the pasta was very dry.
Despite the food short-comings, we enjoyed our evening here. The Turbo Dog was fresh & cold, the service friendly, the prices reasonable and the atmosphere fun & lively. It would be nice to have sandwiches offered on the dinner menu. We were surprised that there weren't any. We will return when back in the area, if only for the wonderful people watching!
