The beaches all run together so if you're visiting it's not a really big deal where you stay since everything is close. Atlantic Beach is more residential, Neptune Beach is slightly more commercial, Jax Beach is younger people & nightlife, and Ponte Vedra is slightly more refined with tougher beach access.
Jacksonville beach is for 18-24 year olds. The bars are kind of trashy with a lot of binge drinking. The beaches have some trash on them because the kids don't care. If you want to party and meet some people in that age range, jax beach is probably great for you. If you want clean beaches and more reserved going out, try Neptune or Atlantic Beach. Just a mile down the beach and its night and day.
