We just left the Pirate's Den last night - we had a great time. I only live about an hour and a half away from Anna Maria, but I always hate making the drive, only spending several hours there and having to drive back on the same day. When we were making plans to visit the island with my family, I knew we would want to stay a night, but because of the holiday and work schedules, knew it wouldn't be possible for 2 nights. We booked Den #1 (2 bed, 1 bath, facing Gulf Drive) 5 days before we needed it. Vicky was very accommodating with the last minute arrangement, and even went out of her way to extend our stay by half a day for a discounted rate last night (we just couldn't leave at 11 am - it was too lovely!) Her parents help her with check-ins and check-outs, and they were very friendly and even gave us a mango off the tree on the property! You can tell that the "Old-Florida style" influences this property - from the foliage, plants, flowers, to the colors of the rooms and "shelled" furniture. No complaints about the furniture - the twin beds in the second bedroom was actually very comfortable. The queen bed in the master room did slant down some, but overall, it was fine.
In unit 1, we were downstairs, directly across the street from the beach access (about 50 yards), but we were next to the pool. We could look out of any window in our unit, facing north, and see the pool. It was nice to hang towels and bathing suits to dry on the chairs outside, had a nice long porch, and outside showers. I liked that they had plenty of chairs around the pool, and covered tables to place our things under. Its also really neat to listen to the parrots in this area. The property has a bird feeder in front, and the parrots love to hang around and eat.
We had a great trip, and would love to go back for another night when it isn't a holiday (the island is definitely busier for a holiday weekend!) We would definitely visit the Pirate's Den again, and plan to. Thank you Vicki! And thank you Ruth Ann for getting our place cleaned so quickly!
As a side note, I did find that the price was a little higher than other places for this time of year (summer is almost always cheaper), even those directly on the beach. Since we were desperate because it was so last minute, I didn't really bother trying to find a place less expensive because I knew I would invest more time looking than it was worth, for a holiday weekend. I rented a condo for a week last year, and the price was significantly less, with an unobstructed view of the gulf, pool table, large 2 bed, 3 bath and slept 8 people. However, when you're only renting for one night, it is much harder to find a place available last minute, and I REALLY appreciate Vicky accommodating us.
