“Great Place to Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

The Pirates Den is a really nice place to stay. Vicki (owner) was awsome, very accommodating! Kathie and Al, vicki's parents are awsome too! Very friendly and treat you like family. The cottages have nice upgrades and are very, very clean! Ruth Ann and Vicki pride themselves on providing a clean environment for the guests. Location is great too, close to the beach, grocery store and drug store is walking distance.

Thank you for the great hospitality, cannot wait to return again next year:)

We just got back from a wedding weekend with friends and family on Anna Maria Island. I looked for places to stay for the 7-9 of us and Pirates Den was the place for us! I called Vickie in tears and she took car of us--we stayed in two apartments--each with two bedrooms--we had kitchens and screened porches--pool, beach--who could ask for more. Cathie and Al were so kind during our stay and no one complained about our little celebration noise on Friday night. We grilled out and cooked and had the best vacation ever! If you are looking for luxury--keep looking. But if you want a great place for a family vacation--this is it! We will be back!

Way overpriced! $160+ for one night! Owner said it is "shabby chic" . Forget the "chic" just Shabby. Uncomfortable OLD mattresses on beds. Old,old sheets--need a good replacing---not sure if they were really clean since they were on the beds and we had no washer/dryer in unit to wash them since washer/dryer is outside of the units. Found a dead really large roach on the bathroom floor. Old, old building and units really in need of updating for the price. Owner said that we should not use the air due to the low temperature during the night because it would cost her money. Really! We paid too much for one night and the windows and fans were on when we got there---because the place smelled! Always be aware of anyone who opens all windows and turns on all fans for guests---probably hiding something. Will not stay here again.

We are very sorry and quite suprised that you had a bad experience, I assure you we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of the pirates den, our ratings reflect this. The air-conditiong is there for everyones use, we dont even control the temperature settings, we let our guests choose their own comfort level ,of course most enjoy the wonderful breeze we have on the island. We have people on site 24hrs to assist our guest, NO ONE came with a concern or a complaint which could have quicky been resolved, we have checked and we did not have any one night guests from PA? or at that rate? Again we appologise. Vicky and Kevin McPhail

Just came back from an amazing family vacation on Anna Maria Island with my parents and my sixteen-year-old daughter, and the jewel in the crown was definitely our 'home away from home' at Pirates Den vacation rental on Holmes Beach. Owner Vicky McPhail and her wonderful parents went WAY above and beyond to ensure that every little comfort was attended to and the place was spotless, comfortable in every way and mere steps from the quiet end of miles of white sand beach. If that's not enough, they had (what seems to be the ONLY) heated pool right outside our door, with a quiet deck offering sun, shade, tables and chairs, and gorgeous parrots overhead to watch while you float in luxury. Vicky's dad seems to have made it a personal mission to ensure that not a leaf is out of place in the surrounding garden, or--God forbid!--in the pool itself, and her mom is a natural nurturer and comic who made us feel part of the family. It was our first time on the Island, and we weren't sure what to expect (particularly as they don't take credit cards, partly in order to keep prices so reasonable) but our expectations were so thoroughly exceeded that my 80 + year old parents have now booked on an annual basis. We looked at other properties around the Island and found nothing that even came close for comfort and convenience (5 minute walk to grocery, drug stores, the free trolley stop and the awesome beach restaurant at Holmes Beach where there is nightly activities and events. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!! We loved it all! Can't wait to go back... :)

Room Tip: We LOVED Unit 1 with the screened front porch and the pool at our toes. Didn't see the other un...

We loved staying here. It was close to everything we needed, but very quiet and peaceful. The owners were very nice and helpful. We stayed in Apt 1 and it was plenty of room for us. The bedrooms were roomy and comfortable. It was within a very short walking distance to the beach. The ocean was clear and the beach was free of seaweed. A really wonderful place to stay !!!

We read all the good reviews for the Pirates Den and will add another to the list. I believe we were the first to rent from the terrific new owners, Vicky and Kevin, who had taken over the place a few days before we arrived. They were every bit as nice as the previous owners that everyone spoke about. We stayed at cottage 5 which was very clean and spacious but they showed us around some of the other units that were unoccupied at the time. We were there in early December, before prime time. Pirates Den is in a great location, a very short walk to the beach, close to a supermarket, and of course, the free Anna Maria trolley system which takes you anywhere around the island. We recommend Pirates Den and plan to go back!

Room Tip: cottage 5 has a queen bed and a single in the one bedroom unit. The wi-fi was excellent.
