“A pleased retired couple/ Hey Beach Bistro ... NEVER CHANGE !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

My husband and I eat at the bistro often and I must say the food is always delicious and the staff is warm and welcoming. Also we are an elderly couple with many years of fine dining experience. We dine at the bistro at least three times a year because they do not fail ! We absolutely live the lobster dishes and especially the strawberry salad. HEY BEACH BISTRO, NEVER CHANGE !

“Overrated and disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

We visited the Beach Bistro in March, for the first and last time. I had heard and read that this was 'the best restaurant in Florida' - not so.
First impression was that it was like walking into a gentlemen's club, wooden panelling, curtains surrounding tables and mirrors all over the walls. It was crowded and the tables were very close together, making it difficult to talk to your guest without tables either side hearing every word - not very romantic. Waiters constantly knocked my chair as they passed by.
The view is lovely - however it was spoiled by the very dirty windows. I understand it is on the beach, but at a cost of $100 per head I would expect the windows to be cleaned before every meal service - after all the 'spectacular ' view is promoted in all the marketing literature.
I found the place to be stale and old. The banquets were cheaply covered, the chiffon ceiling was just dowdy. The very, very tall vases were dirty and the roses could not be appreciated as they were 2ft above the table. The plates were so old, the glaze was wearing off.
The food - it was average. The menu is very 70s/80s - three types of foie gras, three types of lobster just for appetizers - it was hard to find anything but I opted for the strawberry salad as the strawberries were in season. Not bad, just too many strawberries. My husband had the smoked salmon, which was nothing special - out of a packet from Publix I suspect as it looked very familiar. Main course - fish with pistachio crust was nicely cooked but set on a mush of something I couldn't identify, but finally figured out it was mashed potato with caramelized onions; and some sweet sauce, so any crunchiness of the crust was spoiled. We ordered sides, as the menu did not inform us that the main courses came with anything. We had the brussels sprouts hash. The potatoes were fine, but just plain roasted in duck fat. Aparagus did come with the main course, so we really didn't need the sides - but glad we did because the hash was so salty we couldn't eat it.For desert we shared the crepe - nice, but they forgot the banana and a 6 year old could have put the whole dessert together. In all a very pricey meal, very disappointing in atmosphere and not worth the money.
This restaurant caters for those affluent, elderly people who know nothing about the current food scene and are easily impressed - can't blame the owner for cashing in on their gulibility
The Waterfront and Sign of the Mermaid are far better both in food quality, price and atmosphere

“Worth a trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Beach Bistro is off the beaten path but well worth the drive from Tampa or St Pete. We've made the trip a few times, and will do so again. The best ingredients, carefully and not fussily prepared, make for a memorable meal. A bit cramped, yes, but if there were fewer tables maybe we wouldn't have gotten in! High prices for Florida perhaps, but well worth it for a special day. You can spend more, and get much less, at the famous Tampa tourist trap, "B's". Take the drive, unwind, and enjoy.

“Delicious Gourmet Meals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

Loved the menu! It's no wonder it is on Zagat's list this restaurant deserves it. I had the short ribs and they literally melted in my mouth. Delicious! Ambiance is best suited for an older crowd (younger children may not enjoy the more mature menu) Food was pricey but worth every penny.

“Had to be done”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Having read all the hype we decided to give this a whirl. It was fine but not so great. The tables are a little on the small side and a bit cramped. The staff are very uber efficient. The food was okay. I think having so much fine dining on our doorstep in Europe has probably tainted our view. The Americans around us loved it.
