China 1 is a small Chinese restaurant in a strip mall in Holmes Beach, Anna Maria Island, Florida. One must leave the island to find another Chinese restaurant. There is a teeny seating area as most food is carryout. We get an order here from time-to-time when we don't want to eat out, and don't feel like cooking either.
Typically, our order will be two dishes to split, such as chicken with snow peas or broccoli, and cashew chicken. This time, it was moo goo gai pan, hot sour soup and two shrimp egg rolls.
The food took much longer than normal. I waited just outside the open front door watching and waiting. It looked like there was a problem maintaining enough stove flame for the woks.
The hot sour soup was very good. Spicier would have been even better; adding a couple drops of chili oil would likely make it perfect. The shrimp egg rolls were just OK. I added a little Kikkoman soy sauce, which helped, but there were no packets of chinese mustard included in the carryout order.
The moo goo gai pan tasted fine - at first. As we ate a little more, the oil taste surfaced and more or less overpowered the meat-vegetable flavors. When we finished - without eating it all - there was still an old-oil taste remaining in our mouths. Perhaps the seeming stove problem was a factor? We've not experienced this before.
