After reading rave reviews and watching Check Please! and seeing the "regular people" rave about it too, we were excited to try Lola's. Unfortunately it was overpriced and unremarkable.
We had made a reservation and when we got there, we asked if we could sit outside. We were pointed to a table right at the perimeter of the restaurant on the sidewalk where it was quite dark. We asked if we could sit at the table close to the front door which was very well lit - and were told no, that was reserved. So we chose to sit inside, rather than sit in the dark outside where we knew it would be hard to read the menu, and it was quite far from the front door of the restaurant - I would have felt I was just sitting on a sidewalk table rather than being part of the restaurant.
The service seemed a little all over the place - our server brought us water and said he'd be right back to take our order - then disappeared to be replaced by someone else. The table to our left had the same experience - a waitress showed up and said she'd be replacing the server as he had gone to wait on a bigger table in the back. No big deal, but just seemed a little disorganized.
Anyhoo, my husband ordered the "famed" BBQ beef ribs and was disappointed - at $29, he thought it was overpriced for five ribs, a splodge of creamed corn and a few onion rings. The onion rings were only average - the batter came off immediately so we were left with a pile of batter and a pile of cooked onions - never the twain shall meet. My husband found the ribs to be only average - the Coca Cola bbq rib sauce was too strong and too sweet, a little overpowering - and for $5 a rib, they were disappointing. I had the Grilled Portobello Mushroom Tacos - they weren't bad - a little different, but nothing that I thought deserved the accolades this place has received.
The service was fine - not good, not bad, it was perfectly acceptable but just not outstanding in any way. The acoustics were bad - the table to our right had about 6 people and they were a good few feet apart from us, but we still could not hear ourselves speak - or put it this way, we had to talk in raised voices constantly and I kept having to repeat myself - and in the end just gave up on conversation, it was just too much effort.
It was overpriced, portions were small, it was difficult to have a conversation, my husband's bbq ribs were only average, and we were disappointed - just hard to understand how this restaurant could have so many people raving about it. I know we certainly won't.
The big question is: would we go back? No.
