“Cracker at its Finest”

Recently watched a show on television regarding day trips around Florida and this particular show was on Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park and a short ride to The Yearling Restaurant. Only living in Lady Lake we thought what a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We were not disappointed, at either.

The restaurant has a very old relaxed feel with plenty of books and other antiques to look at. Sorry to say we were excorted to the back room and we were not able to here the jazz musician. With some coaxing from another table he did come to the back room, he was terrific.

Our table ordered the sampler which contained, gator, frog legs, fried grren tomato's and fried portabelo mushrooms. Delicious
They ran out of the local chowder but did have New England clam chowder and being from New England ,we were well pleased.
Entre was fried catfish, baked sweet potatoe with brown sugar butter and a salad that was very good with a mango dressing, wonderful. Dessert was the famous sour orange pie, don't pass that up. The portions ample. Well worth the trip.

The last time we went I was expecting old fashioned Florida cracker food, but that wasn't what it was... Seems like they were trying to get above their raisin'. I think a return visit is in order...

A great place hidden from all of those "cookie cutter" restaurants. An exceptional, eclectic restaurant. Great comfort food. Check out the stylings of Willie Green. Also a nice drive to & from here.

This is certainly a unique restaurant and worth a stop in if you're in the neighborhood. We drove for a little over an hour just to try it out and were not disappointed but wouldn't make the drive again just to eat there. It was a busy Saturday evening but we had planned ahead and had a reservation. We didn't have to wait more than about 10 minutes for our table. Our waitress was very friendly and quite attentive although the sour cream for the potato was forgotten and not brought until the potato was nearly gone and a special dietary request was overlooked. Our dinners consisted of one order of broiled scallops, two orders of the stuffed flounder, and a veggie plate. The meals were tasty although the veggie plate was a bit skimpy and not filling enough. The Key Lime pie had the right amount of tartness and the Sour Orange pie was nicely sweet and very tasty. We felt the prices were rather high overall for the area and the amount of food you received.

My family & I went to this restaurant recently. We had seen the advertisement in a hotel magazine during a stop in nearby Gainesville . Based on the adverstisement we reserved for lunch. We were the second table to arrive when they opened at noon. The place was charming , the hostess & waitress very nice. We ordered some fied green tomatoes & mushroom appetizers that were brought promptly & were delicious. We should have left after the appetizers.

I ordered a delmonico steak " Certified Prime" $24.95 & my wife ordered the fish special $19.95 . My teenage kids ordered cheeseburgers. The place filled up quickly. I dont know if it was what we ordered , both items were advertised on the menu or perhaps since we were tourist & not local folks, but our lunch order took an hour & five minutes to arrive. We were the second table to sit & the last (I kid you not) to be served.

Once it came the food was marginal. The steak was small , fatty, gristly & cold. The fish was good and the burgers were ok. They had obviously been sitting for quite awhile since nothing was hot. The sides were average. We waited 65 minutes & ate in 10.

Perhaps this is a fried foods & french fry restaurant because that is what many seemed to order. They advertise beef, quail & venison....I cant imagine what those would taste like. This place is not cheap..... what is upsetting are the prices. For $24.95 you should get a good steak like you do at any steakhouse.... Ruth Cris, Mortons etc which will serve you an awesome steak for $24.95.

I left feeling ripped off.........never agin.
