“The Worst Hotel EVER!”

Newberry Inn Gainesville

Dec 17, 2007
1/1 found this review helpful

We had read the reviews and thought "how bad can it be?" Believe us - it is that bad. The lobby and the pictures on the website are very misleading. The crack under the door was enough to allow various vermin through. The room, although a non-smoking room, was completly nicotine stained - even a cigarette burn on the side of the oh so fancy (and stained) fiberglass bathtub. The carpet was so nasty-dirty we were afraid to take off our shoes. The paint on the ceiling was yellowed and peeling in chunks. The toilet overflowed upon the first flush and it took almost an hour for maintenance to arrive (but he fixed it promptly). Had my husband not been ill that night, we would have driven the 3-hours home (no other accomodations to be found during a football weekend). As it was, we slept in our clothes so the least amount of our skin would touch the fabric. Buyer beware - this hotel has vacancies when no other hotels in the area does for a reason! Just say no. I understand they are going to renovate and become "The Place." They have a loooong way to go.

I was in gainesville visiting family. It was a Gators game that weekend. Couldn't find a room nowhere, seen a girl on the roadway advertising vacany. Went to "The Place", was told the room would be $200. Thought we have finally found a nice place, what a suprise. The room was Awful. Hair everywhere, mold, carpet dirty & smelly, microwave nasty, just plain awful. Went to the front desk to complain was told to come back in the A.M. when the manager was on duty. Went back at ckout the same guy. Didn't help us one bit. Will never stay at the newberry inn again. P.S. CLEAN UP

“How can they treat the Gators like this?”

The only reason we're giving this hotel a 2 (and there are NO signs that actually identify the "Newberry Inn and Conference Center") is because we saw the Gator football team Sat am before heading to the stadium. Sadly, the Gators have been staying here before home games for the past 30 years. Someone from the U needs to see what they are subjecting our beloved Gators to before a game.

As to our room. It really WAS the swamp. It was so damp that every time we entered the room we felt like we were swimming. From the A/C that didn't dehumidify to the shower exhaust that didn't work I can see where the mold stories come from. After staying for 3 days when we later opened our suitcases all of our clothes were still damp. Yuck!

The first night when we tried calling the front desk someone would pick up and then promptly hang up on us. What???

The first am housekeeping came and told us we could get the room cleaned now or not at all. We asked for some clean towels and left it at that.

Finally, we may have had otherworldly guests staying w/ us. The tv would turn off w/o explanation or change channels w/o warning. Spooky!

Believe it or not someone is attempting to make a "luxury" condo complex at this site. Good luck with that.

“BetterThan Expected”

At the end of my extremely busy and exhausting day I was anticipating the worst based on previous experiences with unknown hotels ( and reviews that I read at the last minute)...I had made up my mind that if it was really awful I would leave and try to find someplace else to stay for one night. (All the hotels were booked up that weekend). Upon arrival I was pleased that it wasn't as hard to find as I had read ( a little tricky but not bad) and my first visual impression was a pleasant one. The lobby was cool and clean and the staff were friendly and attentive. The pool looked clean (I forgot my bathing suit and so I didn't get in) and the landscaping was pleasing to the eye. As for the room, well, it had some things to be desired but it wasn't unbearable. The bathroom was clean. The shower had good pressure. The bed wasn't great. There was some mold residue on the pictures hanging over the beds. The air conditioner worked but barely. It was quiet. The place definately needs some TLC but I've stayed in worse places for more $.

“Substandard rundown”

I was with son as part of a visiting soccer team. Most of the team stayed next door at the sold out Holiday Inn (which was not much better, I will not stay there ever). Our room had a front door that let light and cold air through. It had an adjoining room and the door would not close all the way. When I went to check to see if it was locked, the handle feel off in my hands. The boltlock on the adjoining door was painted so it would not work. Management said they were sold out and could not move us.

There is a lot of street noise and I woke up to police or ambulance sirens several times. The carpeting was very old and worn. It appeared dirty so we kept shoes/sandels on always.

The bathroom was decent and appeared clean. I have severe allergys and did not find any mold. Although other soccer families staying there did.

The sheets on my bed were very worn and at first I thought they may have sand in the bed. The scratchiness was from the sheets being very worn. My sons bed had decent sheets.

My son was in shower when room service came by. I asked them to return later. We left for a game and when we returned that late afternoon they had not ever come back. We never saw them again.

We are returning to Gainesville for another soccer tournament this weekend and will not be returning to this rundown hotel.
