My husband I just spent 3 nights at Cabot Lodge during our house hunting trip to Gainesville. I was nervous about making the hotel selection, since all of the ones I was looking into had such mixed reviews, but overall I was happy with our choice. The lobby, halls and rooms have all been updated - the lobby is cute with lots of windows, couches, chairs, and a large bar where they serve breakfast in the morning and the complimentary happy hour in the evening. The halls have new carpet and the rooms themselves also have new carpet, bedding, tvs and furniture, and the room smelled nice and clean. The bed was very comfortable (we were in a King room). The bathroom had not been updated. The tub & tile were worn and the wallpaper was peeling under the sink, but the bathroom overall was in ok shape.
Having the free wireless Internet was great - we didn't have any issues with slow service or anything.
We were impressed with the breakfast - we were expecting the Comfort Inn type breakfast with the doughnuts and cereal in the large plastic containers, but it was actually a pretty good spread. We made our own waffles each morning, and there was fresh fruit, muffins, doughnuts, cooked eggs, cereal, bread, English muffins, and yogurt. We took our food to the tables in the lobby/lounge area to eat - it was nice except that on a couple of the mornings they had the tvs turned on way too loud, and several of them were set to different channels.
We were back to the hotel in time on two evenings for the happy hour - they had a good selection of beer, one brand of wine (the Merlot was not good), plus pretty much every spirit so we had gin & tonic, vodka & cranberry, etc. You can get one drink at a time for the whole two hours if you like. They also had a popcorn machine.
We made it out to the pool only on the first night we arrived and were the only ones in it. It was clean and seemed taken care of.
The location of the hotel was very convenient - right near the I75 (although we couldn't hear the highway in the room) and all of the restaurants and shops on Archer. We actually walked a mile along Archer one evening to Matsuri Sushi for dinner, which was also very good btw.
We booked through hotels.com and got the room for $65 ($30/night off the posted rate), so overall I would say this is a very good value and we would stay here again.
