We were in Fort Walton Beach for a funeral ... needed something for one night and in a hurry ... needed something close to the deceased's home, the funeral home, the church, etc. This hotel fit that requirement ... but otherwise it was pretty grim. When we checked in we told that the actual rooms/suites were across the street. I asked if there was any security there, and was told no ... that you used your hotel key to enter the building. We had asked for a ground floor, which we were given. The suite was just not clean ... and I don't know why I did this, but I checked and NONE of the windows locked!! Talk about a major security issue ... I was floored and getting a major unsettled feeling about this place. We went back to the lobby and changed to a 3rd floor location. The hall reeked of smoke, but the suite appeared to be smoke free. (By the time we left we realized the suite was not smoke free ... but the mere act of opening and closing the door into the smoke filled hall did not help the situation.) The windows still did not lock, but we hoped we were okay that high. This suite was in better shape than the one on the first floor. I put the spread from the bed on the sofa as it didn't look very clean. The bed was very comfortable. I normally take a sit down bath, but am glad I opted for a shower this time ... the tub bottom was not clean. We did have the breakfast and it was passable ... we stuck to toast and pastry. Would I stay there again? Absolutely not ... I would drive an hour rather than go through that experience. Perhaps this was a nice place when it was new, but it's well past its prime ... is surrounded by what appear to be several apartment units ... is on a busy, noisy street ... and is not in the best area of town. (To be honest, though, our impression was that there may not be a 'best area of town' in Fort Walton Beach proper.)
