My wife and I were hungry for pizza, so we went with friends to Helen Back's Cafe on Okaloosa Island. "Cafe" is a loose definiton of this place--it reminded me of campus bars I used to frequent in my younger days--several sprawling seating areas with a combination of tables with chairs and picnic tables, two large bars, several flat screen TVs and a pool table room. There is a large outdoor seating area on the waterfront that's open when the weather is warm.
The service was a bit slow (we waited 15 minutes before we recieved a menu) but it was Friday night during Happy Hour so it was a busy evening. When she did appear, our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Our friends ordered nachos and we had a small pizza. The food arrived in an acceptable amount of time. The nachos were average and the pizza was good. The beer was cheap ($1.75 for a 16 ounce domestic draft during Happy Hour).
The menu is limited--the main entrees are pizza and subs. You can order a small 9" pizza or a large 16" pizza--there is no medium size. Also, in the evenings this is not a family pizza parlor. The patrons were a mix of young adults and older couples (mostly snowbirds like myself) but we didn't see any kids. It might be different at lunch.
If you like bars with good pizza and beer and a lively atmosphere, then Helen Back gets a thumbs up. If you want a quiet dinner with a glass of wine and good conversation, go elsewhere. :-)
