“very cool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

It was interesting seeing all the fragments of pottery in the museum and the incising on them. It is awesome that the mound is preserved to the extent that it is. Helps us remember there is something that has been here since before 1776. Near the Indian Museum and Mound there is also a schoolhouse museum. The guide there was very informative and it was a neat place to visit. There also is a small Civil War exhibit nearby. We were glad to have access to these resources of an educational nature while visiting beaches in the Panhandle.

“History Preserved”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

The Indian Temple Mound Museum is a peaceful haven in the heart of downtown Fort Walton Beach. While the city is bustling just outside the museum once inside I was transformed to a time long ago when Native Americans lived here. The artifacts tell the story of the mound Indians that lived here. It's fascinating to see the pottery and photos and to read/hear the story of how they built the mound carrying the dirt by hand. Then when you climb the stairs to the mound to begin to understand just how much dirt they carried and how much time it took. On top of the mound you realize how they must have looked out over the bay and surveyed the land around them. The staff at the museum are knowledgeable and more than answered all of my questions. The best part for me was the gift shop! The jewelry is beautiful. Browsing thru the books, little drums, dream catchers, CDs etc. was delightful. The Indian Temple Mound Museum is the best place to visit in Fort Walton Beach.

“A Hidden Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

As you drive off the Okaloosa Island bridge into Downtown on Hwy.98 it's easy to miss this one-of-a-kind museum. The site is very densely vegetated with tall palm trees, huge old oak trees, whose spreading branches are hung with Spanish Moss, and many other leafy trees. This makes it almost impossible to see the huge, circular Indian Temple Mound, the imposing museum and the three other buildings that comprise this National Historic Landmark.

On our one week holiday to beaches of this area, my wife and I had driven past this location several times without noticing the museum, on our way to shop, eat at a local restaurant or on our way to another attraction. It wasn't until I looked on Tripadvisor for "Things. To Do" that my eye was caught by the favourable reviews. We decided to visit the next day on June 16. We were very glad we did, for this historic complex turned out to be quite interesting, informative and one that stirred the imagination.

Not only did we see an exhibit explaining the history of the very impressive earth mound, built by hand over several thousands of years by native inhabitants, but also depicts 10,000 years of Native American life in this part of Florida. We also toured the fascinating Civil War Exhibit, the 100-year-old Garner Post Office, and the quaint two-room, small wooden Camp Walton Schoolhouse where local kids were taught between 1918 and 1936. In it, we listened closely to the fascinating guide, a retired teacher, who told us all about the school, its long-ago teachers and pupils.

We left with a deeper appreciation of several aspects of local life spanning the millennia in this area. A visit to this amazing museum complex is highly recommended. At about $5 per person this is an attraction not to miss.

“Awesome history, great stop!”

This museum is well curated and is a treasure-trove of information about the civilizations present here before Europeans settled. Very well-researched.

We're glad you had a good time at our museums! Our museums cover over 12,000 years of history about Native Americans and local history, and our exhibits are constantly evolving. Come visit again and you'll probably see something different!
