While researching possible dining venues for my annual trip to Ft. Myers Beach, I came across Heidi's Island Bistro. Luckily for us, we were in town on the first Sunday of the month, which is when they do a dinner buffet (seatings at either 5 or 7 p.m.) for $20 per person - a perfect price. We chose the 5 p.m. seating and arrived about 15 minutes early, planning to have a glass of wine or weissbier, but were disappointed that the doors were locked and we had to wait outside. Numerous other customers had the same idea and expressed the same disappointment. Once we got inside, we understood why: the bar area is VERY small and part of the buffet was set up directly in front of it. After a very hectic 10-15 minutes while the hostess sat everyone and what appeared to be one waiter (!!) took everyone's drink orders, we began to relax and look around. The decor is really pretty and modern - not the Old World German style I was expecting - and the music playing was at first a Top 40 station but then switched to the Rat Pack (both stations were a nice surprise). The dining room looks like it seats about 50 people, so the atmosphere was a bit intimate but in no way crowded. Besides the wait for our first drinks, service was otherwise good. The buffet consisted of pork or chicken schnitzel, pork roast, potato pancakes, spatzle, dumplings, red cabbage, sauerkraut, sauerbraten, salad, shrimp cocktail, breads and rolls, and THE MOST amazing potato soup I've ever had. And these are just the items I can remember! There is also a bakery attached to the dining room, so desserts were amazing too. Our favorite was what tasted like deep fried donut dough with apple filling and sprinkled with sugar - - very very hot and very very DELICIOUS (we went back for more!). Although we had a reservation, there were a few empty tables that could have accommodated walk-ins (the 7 p.m. seating is probably more crowded). I can't rave enough about the food; every single thing I had was delicious (I'm running out of words to describe this food!). One of the people in my party never had German food before and she loved everything she tried and left very full and satisfied. This was our favorite meal out of the 10 days we spent in Ft. Myers Beach.
