“Outstanding Day at the Slough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

We took off not knowing what we would find and to our surprise, what an excellent way to spend the morning or afternoon. It was a beautiful morning and we walked the boardwalk and saw wild boar and alligtors resting in the water. Then as we headed on we saw red and blue herons just stroling in the slough as well as other birds and beautiful scenery as well. It is a worthwhile trip for anyone and we thoroughly enljoyed ourselves. We also took along sandwiches and ate at the picnic tables made available.

“A great way to spend a few days in Ft. Myers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

We had a group of 5 go for a day-trip and we were not disappointed. We used the "pay-to-park" machine and bought a full-day parking pass for $5. We started at the info center and got the lay of the land from the very friendly staff. The restrooms were clean and the little gift shop was nicely done.
We took the nature walk along boardwalk-path. It wound through the trees and ponds of the preserve. We saw Herons, Ibises, turtles, and two baby alligators! We were hoping to see some river otters - especially at "otter pond", but no such luck. The walk was very nice. The boardwalk style decking made it easy and level. We spoke to a group of elderly people who said it was very easy for them to get around too. You stay clean - there's no walking through mud or dirt paths, and you get a great view of the wildlife. We got some great photos!
I would definitely recommend it to others (and have already), and I will go back again.

“Great place to take walks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

Really enjoyed the free tour. The ranger was informative and friendly. We took a stroller around ourselves and had a nice time taking pictures of all the different kinds of birds.

“Natural Beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

An amazing place to experience a natural cypress swamp and all it's wildlife. Everytime we come here it is different, with many different species of birds to be seen if you take your time and walk quietly. There are several ponds with observations spots where you can search for turtles, alligators and the birds that roost in the trees. There are volunteers walking through the areas which will answer questions, or offer information on what wildlife can be seen ahead on the boardwalk. If you're there early in the morning you may also see the otters. We've heard and seen wild hogs in different areas of the swamp. You can hear them rooting through the ferns, then biting and chewing. Amazingly loud! On one visit we saw 2 female hogs at the edge of the parking area nursing their brood of young. They were laying on the dry ground, and we were very close to them. Near the Otter Pond is a huge bees nest, one of the biggest hives we've ever seen.

The Visitor's Center was interesting, especially if you have children, with interactive displays encouraging them to touch and see. This is a free attraction, but parking is one dollar per hour.

There is also a picnic area, but beware of the squirrels. They are quite tame, and although there are signs warning people not to feed them, we saw many people ignoring this. As a result we had to shoo them away while we were trying to eat.
