“Disappointing Experience on Wife's Birthday”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

We had heard many great things about The Veranda so we chose it to celebrate my wife's birthday last evening. We were seated in what turned out to be a very poor location and it was very hot. Perhaps we were seated there as it was our first visit and we were not known to the hostess. We actually hesitated when first being seated there but she did not seem very keen on finding us a better spot. I had to remove my jacket and my wife her sweater. We asked our server to see about the air conditioning. The location was a table for two at the base of a stairway that went upstairs and was very close to the servers plate and utensil area and also very close to the women's restroom. Throughout the evening, servers went up and down the stairs, some quietly, others not. The servers also assembled and talked at the station which was annoying and distracting. And there was a steady stream of ladies going by to use the facilities. The waiter did get the air conditioning corrected at least for a while. It did get too warm again later (perhaps another patron thought it a bit chilly).
The food was very good but not exceptional as diners should expect at the prices charged. My wife did love the Oysters Rockefeller appetizer and her Salmon dish was very good. My French Onion Soup and Veal Picatta were also very good. The only negative on both dishes was the broccoli rabe which is not a favorite of ours and we did not recall seeing it mentioned on the menu. We selected the Bananas Foster dessert which is prepared table side. The waiter was very good at the preparation and it was entertaining for us and other tables to witness. It was very good but the portions, especially the amount of ice cream, were too large for us after such a filling meal. What bothered us the most was that when we finished what we could of the dessert, the dishes were not removed from the table. I counted at least seven servers pass with out taking them. They actually remained after we asked for the check, paid and left the table.
My wife said that she did not think she would want to return having felt that we were seated so poorly and not treated especially well considering that the waiter, hostess, etc knew it was an important special occasion.

“WOW A real Restaurant in Ft Myers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

We had heard some people rave about the Verandah and finally went there. Waiters in tuxedos with real manners! These are professional people who are not young but well trained (do I miss the gum-chewing kid who says "Hi Guys...", NOT). The menus had many choices which I could have ordered but selected a stuffed veal chop. My lady tried the Salmon. Both were excellent; but I am sure other choices would have been equally good. The atmosphere matched the service and menu. Finally a restaurant that meets our NYC-based expetations.

“Again one of our favorite places in Southwest Florida...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2014

For the past 5 years we have visited Southwest Florida during the winter we have dined at the Veranda as a special treat. Again, as in past years it was excellent!

We were seated promptly at our reservation time and then immediately attended to by Larry, our waiter for the evening. Our cocktails were served quickly and perfectly made. Our appetizer was the escargot in pastry, which were very tender and the pastry and sauce outstanding.

All 4 of us had Caesar salad, which is prepared at the table. There can't be a dozen restaurants in the country who do this anymore and it was classic Caesar.

For our entrees we had sea bass, which was sauteed crispy outside and moist and creamy inside. We also had the Buffalo steak, cooked perfectly medium rare and so tender you could cut it with a fork. I had the rack of lamb cooked perfectly medium, and tasty but not gamy.

Desserts, coffee and espresso followed and all praised them.

The only reason I did not give a full 5 star rating is that we felt a bit rushed in our courses, a little like they were trying to hurry us along so they could get another seating before closing. Also, though the espresso was very good, the coffee taste like that weak, dishwater coffee you get at chain restaurants.

All and all will again come back and enjoy the wonderful food and ambience of the Veranda!!!

PS. Stop by the piano bar for an after dinner drink.

“VIP Treatment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

Chose The Veranda for our Dad's 80th birthday after lots of internet research from outside the area since we converged from the Northeast and Midwest. We were initially concerned because all we did was make reservations over the phone and tell them that it was a special event. We just made the reservation and left the details to them. Whether by luck or group size (8), they placed us in a private room and our waiter pampered us from there and always seemed to show up just when we needed him without appearing to hover. We were a diverse group and the menu seemed to match our tastes well. From seafood to steak to antelope (yes, antelope was one of the specials), everyone was pleased with their choice. Even though most all of us passed on the appetizers, we still struggled to find room for dessert. Those who found "room" were more than satisfied.

Highly recommended for any event that you want to make special. A nice restaurant where you can wear a suit or be a bit more relaxed in collared shirt and slacks. Our only regret was not having arranged a birthday cake in advance. I'm confident that the staff would have taken care of it if asked. They adapted quickly with a candle on the dessert of choice for the guest of honor.

We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary with dinner at The Veranda. We were definitely not disappointed. The atmosphere is lovely and the food outstanding, as well as the service. Ask for a table by a window for a view of their beautiful garden/patio, especially at night. We plan to make this place our anniversary tradition.
