“Captive, but not Captiva”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

I stayed here for a conference and like other conference-centered resorts, you are stuck here when you are staying here unless you want to drive. You are captive to the restaurants on site and the amenities available there. I've stayed at several such resorts, usually with unhappy experiences.

If you do have a car, it is in a good location -- easy drive across the causeway to Sanibel and Captiva. It is also an easy drive to Fort Myers Beach, but the traffic is unbelievable on that causeway.

But since the amenities are so plentiful here, I am giving this stay a very good rating. There are bicycles to use, pools to swim in, a fishing dock, small beach, spas and many other activities for guests. I did sit by the pool, but didn't have a chance to use many amenities since I was attending a conference (though it was tempting). The staff was incredibly friendly and well-trained.

The rooms are large and clean with a good flat screen television and nice deck overlooking the pool and harbor. The sunsets were spectacular. I ate mostly at the conference, but I did have a flatbread pizza at the gazebo-shaped casual restaurant (it was overpriced and uninspired).

Overall, this is a good resort with much to offer a conference planner, family looking for a getaway or a couple wanting a romantic weekend away.

We stayed here on 1/24/13 to 1/27/13 for a business convention. This place is beautiful. The lobby is very pretty. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We ate at all the venues and all the food we ate was good. We had drink at the bar a few times and very nice place. There are two pool. It wasn't really warm enough for us for pool times but many people were there enjoying the pool and the pool service looked very attentive. There was a kids clubs. We did use the spa and enjoyed it very much. They have an indoor co-ed pool and a hot tub in the women's side. When we arrived we were informed they upgraded our room because we are Marriott members. I had no complains about this place. If you are going for beach, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a beautiful resort with good pool this is the place to be.

Room Tip: All rooms have a good view but I feel the rooms that look out at the pool were the best.

We stayed here for a short honeymoon following our Fort Lauderdale wedding in December. Our stay wasn't bad, but it wasn't too amazing. We checked out on January 1, and I forgot my Sephora makeup kit in the hotel room. We contacted the resort, and they said they would look for it. No one called us back, so we had to call them again. We were told "it hasn't shown up yet". Housekeeping was supposed to call us, and we never heard from them. We contacted the front desk manager who sent us an incident report to file with Marriott. We sent the report on January 10, and we still have not heard anything back. We made another phone call yesterday and left a message which has not been returned. Friday will be one month since we checked out of the resort and nothing at all has been done to resolve this matter.

We have stayed at many Marriotts in the past and never had anything disappear. I sincerely hope the management at this resort is taking these types of incidents seriously and that staff is held responsible for their actions.

Also, service in the hotel's outlets was extremely lackluster. After having a mediocre meal at the "Tarpon House" we had to wait about 20 minutes to get our check. The manager said the computer was tied up with a banquet or something. The next evening we had some apps and a nice bottle of wine while watching the sunset at the hotel bar. View was beautiful but our waitress simply dropped the bottle of wine and did not return to pour another glass. I guess this is what Marriott service is coming to. Guess we should stay somewhere nicer next time.

The hotel was lovely, especially in the Captiva Tower. What I was most impressed by however, was the staff. Every person from the concierge, to the wait staff, check in staff, restaurant manager and shop staff were incredibly friendly, genuine and helpful. I can't recall the last time I stayed at a hotel where EVERY single staff member was beyond gracious. I enjoyed my stay and only wish I could have been there longer!

the hotel was very clean and well managed. The frontdesk was right on top of every request and the check in process was very professional.
the room was clean, well appointed and even with the age of the hotel everything was ok. The furniture was up to date and the bed slep very well.

Overal I would highly recommend this hotel. We were there only for three nights and two days but well worth the getaway.

Room Tip: oceanfront is the only way to really appreciate this hotel.

The hotel has definite ups and downs, depending on what you plan to do during your stay. First, the plus: The entire staff is very attentive and knowledgeable. They will go out of their way to take care of you, from the valets to the front desk folks to the concierge. The tennis center and spa get sa thumbs up also. Another plus is the view, especially from the water side. With boats and activity to watch, sitting on balcony is better than watching an empty sea. Of course, that's the negative too. As the name says, it's on the harbor (or harbour), so there's no beach. You have to go over the causeway for that. If you like the pool, you're fine. Finally, one negative about the rooms: water pressure is terrible and the temperature keeps changing from too cool to too hot.

The Sanibel Harbour Marriott would get an Excellent rating from us if it wasn't so overpriced. Two nights here cost over $100 more than 3 nights at the Hyatt in Key West. The food and drinks were also more expensive. But the customer service, our room and the grounds were awesome. This was actually the second time we stayed here and we immediately noticed that the rooms were updated (we stayed in a one-bedroom, king suite), but we also noticed the updated prices. We will probably look for a different place to stay the next time we visit the Ft Myers area, simply because of the expense--but we will definitely miss it!

Room Tip: The waterfront rooms give you the best view.
