I stayed in an efficiency on the 3rd floor of the front building in March 2006 with 4 friends. The room had 2 queen beds and a pullout couch. It was dated, but livable.
I made the mistake of returning to the Avalon Thurs Oct 18 – Mon Oct 22, 2007 based on my previous experience. I remembered reading TA reviews that said the front building is “nicer” than the back building. This is definitely true (comparatively speaking). The hotel would not grant our request for a front building efficiency since we booked through a travel website this time. We got stuck with room 215 in the back building.
The room was disgusting – dirty, moldy, smelly, in complete disrepair and not cleaned from the previous guests. There was half eaten food, bottles and cans still in the room. I wore flip flops in the room at all times, especially in the shower.
Not only was it dirty, but it wasn’t big enough to accommodate 5 people like the front building efficiency. There was 1 queen bed, 1 double bed and NO pullout couch – just a chair. The front desk said there wasn’t anywhere else they could put us. I like my friends, but 3 people in 1 bed is just ridiculous.
Trying to get enough towels was a chore. Everyday we told them how many people were in the room and they still left only 2 towels. You think they would get it after 4 days. We also asked for a 5th pillow and never got one.
The only “pros” about the Avalon are that it’s across the street from the beach, free internet access in the lobby and free continental breakfast – coffee, muffins and (moldy) bagels.
We will definitely never return to the Avalon – especially since we have learned that the Merriweather has 2 bedroom, 2 bath apts for about the same price and great reviews on TA! The back building of the Avalon should be knocked down. It looks like it is going to collapse soon anyway.
