Spent the week of August 19-26, 2007 at the Beachplace Towers. Overall we had a very nice time at the BPT. I was hesitant because some of the reviews on tripadvisor were a bit critical, but went with an open mind. These are the things we found abou the BPT.
The drive form the airport was a breeze. It was literally 15 minutes door to door and easy to find. At first I drove past the resort and had to double back, but it was my fault. I wasn't paying attention. Too busy looking at the beach.
At first the navigating through the parking lot was a bit confusing, but after the initial drive up to the P4 level, it wasn't a problem at all. We had a minivan and I didn't find it to be clumsy going through the parking lot. If your a small family or couple, I would suggest not renting a car and just using cabs to get around. I believe the cost of a taxi to and from the airport is very reasonable. So in hind sight, the weekly cost of a minivan ($480) and the daily parking cost ($14 per day/ $98 for the week) at the resort could've been saved if i used taxis instead.
We spent the week with friends and requested to have the 2 bedroom condos for each family to be close together, so it took a while after the scheduled 3pm check in to accommadate this request. We waited until 4:30pm when we approached the front desk to see what the hold up is. Thats when "Hector" at the front desk made some adjustments and got us our 2bdrm condos next to each other as requested. he was a great help.
We were on the 11th floor. I took the advice of previous reviews and requested the intercoastal view because I was afraid of the noise from the bars down below. Best advice so far. I felt that this was a better than the ocean view. In the evenings the sunset is beautiful and the lights of the city are gorgeous. No complaints and would recommend the intercoastal side. The rooms were very spacious and clean. If your looking for 5 star look elsewhere. Everything was very nice and comfortable. The furnishing were a little dated but nicely decorated. We requested a couple of pack n plays and high chairs, both were delivered quickly after we were in our room. The 2 bedrooms are actually a 1 bedroom with an adjoining studio. So a lack of space was never an issue. There are pool towels in each room and getting clean ones took a phone call to housekeeping. Try to request a room away from the trash room. We were not close to it, but whenever i had to throw out the garbage, i could smell the garbage drop as I got closer to it.
The elevators were a bit slow at times, but never had to wait more than 5 minutes at a time. They could use additional elevators, but it wasn't much of a bother for us.
The beach is right across the street. It's a quick elevator ride down to P1 and walk to the beach. All of the hotels on A1A is situated the same way. BPT offers free sand toys for the kids and for a fee, beach chairs and umbrellas for rent are available. The beach was clean and the water was very warm. On the beach itself there are umbrellas and lounge chairs already set up. These are the property of the city and for $35 per day you can rent them. On 1 day I tried to negotiate with the guy in charge of the beach chairs. I explained to him if we can get a discounted rate because we were only going to stay for another hour and leave before noon. He quickly became irritated with me because "he gets asked the same question 50 times a day and there are no discounts". I guess I was the 51st person for that day. I didn't appreciate his attitude and let him know it. I paid his $35 and told him it wasn't necessary to bark like that. After a while he realized how he reacted and offered us an additional lounge chair. Despite this 1 issue, which had nothing to do with the BPT, we enjoyed the beach alot.
Places to eat. Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant is 2-3 blocks south of the BPT. decent food but their A/C wasn't working. They had mobile coolers, the kind you see on tv for football players while they're sitting on the bench during a hot game day. they told us that it would be cool enough inside. Wrong. It made the dinner a very bad experience. A lot of the restaurants in the area are much of the same. "open air" restaurants. So be sure to choose a restaurant with A/C for a comfortable meal. The best place to have a good meal at very reasonable prices...the Palm Grill. It's on level P2. $4.99 lunches and very reasonable dinners. The Terayaki wings are a hit the kids. Definitely try the place, well worth it.
The Market place in the resort is more fast food rather than convenience store. Has a Pizza Hut and cold sandwiches to offer. I think that if they served burgers and fries or items like that it would be much better. One day for lunch we ordered take out from the Hooter's on P3 and brought it back to the pool. the rest of the week we spent our meals either at the Palm Grill, Lu Lu's (just ok) Hooter's(take out) or cooked in the room. There is a great Publix supermarket south on A1A. It's about the 3rd light after the bridge. Get your weekly supplies there. They have everything. There is also a Walgreens Drug store also south on A1A, right over the bridge.
I would highly recommend to go to the "Original Steakhouse and Sports Theatre" restaurant. Very good food at a great price. It's a cross between a steakhouse and sports bar. It's very kid friendly. Try the ribs, wings and Rib eye. You won't go wrong. It's located in the same shopping center as the Publix.
Went to Boomer's. It an amusement center. Not much in terms of rides for toddlers, but it has a bunch of stuff for the older kids. 8 yrs old and up. Very large Video arcade room and 3 minature golf courses. Also has go carts, coaster and bumper cars. the kids enjoyed it.
Los Olas is a riverfront center. Has a bunch of restaurants, bars and shops. Nothing for kids of any age. It's not a very large complex and you can walk from one end to another in 5 minutes. The one thing they have which is kid friendly is the water tour. It goes through the bay to see the houses on "millionaire row". When you get to the BPT and look out on the Intercoastal side, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Overall we had a very nice time at the BPT. No major complaints or issues. The location is great and the accommadations were very comfortable, comfortable enough where we were able to relax and enjoy the Florida sun. I hope this review is of help.
