Went down for a long weekend with my husband..........very satisfied, this is a very good deal...........it's a nice, clean, cute hotel a block from the beach. We arrived about 10am on Friday, since the place was not full we were able to get into our room right away. Patty was very accomodating.........we had a quiet room with an ocean view...........the room was a good size, we had a king bed which was very comfortable, we slept great. The room could use a clock radio, we like music while we are getting ready and there were no clocks in the room. The bathroom could use updating, but was clean, the shower had good pressure and the towels were quality, thick ones. Make sure to bring your own shampoo & conditioner, we only got soap. Although it isn't mentioned on the website, there is a blow dryer in the bathroom. Having a small fridge came in very handy, we bought water & beer at the convenience store a few blocks away. The pool is small, but it was big enough, there were plenty of chairs and they were in good condition. I liked the fact there are shade trees by the pool...........they give the place character and you can get out of the sun for awhile if you want. We used the shuffle board by the pool, just ask at the desk. Noticed they were renting videos at the office, but no VCR to use them.??? Mick was very nice, pleasant & informative about things in the area. He called a cab for us when we were ready to leave. We didn't get a car, just there for beach & sun, didn't really need one since things are walkable. Only 3-4 blocks away there is a pizza place that serves a good breakfast and a couple of other casual restaurants and convenience stores. In the other direction, about 3/4 of a mile there is a the Beach Place with plenty of nightlife and outdoor cafes. We are big walkers, we went on a walk every morning along the beach-beautiful! There is a nice mall that is walkable on Sunrise, you can always take a cab back if you buy stuff. At the Beach Place, there is a really fun place called Howl at the Moon that has dueling pianos, has a lot of audience participation.

  • Liked — location near the beach, has character, fridge in room
  • Disliked — needs clock radio in room

My family booked this hotel for a 2 night pre-cruise stay. The owner Mick was a super nice guy, I cannot say the same for his wife Patty who was not friendly upon check-in or any other time. We booked two rooms for the 5 of us. In an effort to save some money, I asked Mick if we could switch to one room with a rollaway bed in order to save ourselves some $$. His answer was no, the reason being that the maid couldn't move around to clean, which I don't agree with. I feel he just wanted the extra room rented, seeing as there were several other vancancies at the hotel. There were 2 padded chairs in one of our rooms that were badly stained, the a/c sounded like a freight train and the bathroom had pubic hair on the floor. I would not recommend this hotel at all, unless the price was 1/2 of what we paid. I feel bad writing this because Mick was a gracious host, but not so gracious to my wallet.

Management response from TropiRockMick, Owner
(Management representative)
May 3, 2007
I truly regret that anyone would have a valid complaint about Tropi Rock and everyone here works their hardest to make every guest's stay as pleasant as possible. Readers need to be aware, though, that sometimes a customer is disgruntled for reasons of their own making. They then misuse the TripAdvisor forum as an anonymous podium to condemn the hotel, akin to graffiti written on a subway wall or exaggerated stories written in a supermarket tabloid. I have seen this many times and it is not only hurtful, but is also distressing because of TripAdvisor's high profile and the impact on my business and on my family.

In the review, the only item that is (partially) factual and (partially) accurate is the portion about the air conditioner. The guest did, indeed, report this to me during her first night - but failed to report to you that the problem (minor tightening of a loose support bolt) was promptly corrected the following morning. Aside from this, the guest never reported any maintenance items of any kind to my staff or me. I am not clairvoyant and cannot amend problems about which I have no knowledge.

It is my belief that the root cause for the review is the portion regarding two rooms versus one. This issue is the main reason I chose to respond, because the reviewer implies that I arbitrarily forced them to rent two rooms. Her exact words are "I feel he just wanted the extra room rented". This is unfair, untrue and the reviewer knows it. When she booked the rooms, her wish was to place five adults in one hotel room and I explained at that time that we never allow five adults to occupy a single room. I have no desire to become a slumlord and four adults is the maximum, period. I do this for reasons of housekeeping and hygiene, because five adults simply leave too much baggage and clutter scattered about the room. The problem is greatly amplified (as in this case) when the party is taking a cruise, considering all the extra packing that is required for formal wear, casual wear, swimwear, shoes, etc. My maids can barely step through the room and certainly can't do an adequate job of cleaning. It's interesting that the same person who complains of having found a hair on the bathroom floor is perfectly fine with squeezing five adults into a room like sardines in a can, to the point where a maid can't sweep or mop. For the record, the only time I allow five people to share a room would be a situation where two parents share a room with three small children.

I am publishing this for the world to see, but also for the reviewer herself to see so she will know that this is, in fact, our policy and she was not misled in any way. Whether I had vacant rooms at that time is irrelevant and I am not so desperate nor so mercenary as to milk someone for an extra room rental. The reviewer knew all this when she booked the room, yet at the time of arrival she tried to demand that my wife, Patty, waive our policy and "shoe horn" all five of them into one room. Patty appropriately declined, explained our policy one more time and now is accused of being unfriendly as a result.

One more thing. Although the reviewer complains about having to pay for two rooms, she makes no mention of the discount I voluntarily gave to her at the time of booking. Since she wished only one room and admittedly was required to take two because of my policy, I discounted the price of the rooms. The discount was not requested by her and was surely not required of me, but was intended to be a small gesture of goodwill. The discount saved her party a total of $62.16 for a short two-night stay. My thanks? Just re-read the review and I hope you can see irony in her use of the word "gracious"....

Our post-cruise stay at Tropi Rock was enjoyable. We enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly attentiveness of the owners Mick and Patty. They are extremely gracious and helpful people who care about their customers.

Our cruise ended in Miami and after having a terrible time with transportation between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, we ended up getting to Tropi Rock before 11:00am. Needless to say that 11:00am is way before check-in time, but Patty helped us out by getting our room ready in less than 15 mins. Thanks Patty!

We were only staying one day and had a 5:30am flight the next morning. Mick not only ordered us a cab for the next morning and set up a wake up call, but he also verified the wake-up call and cab arrangements that evening. Thanks Mick.

The Resort has a swimming pool, a gardened courtyard, tennis courts, a picnic pavilion with BBQ equipment you can use, laundry room, and two computers with free internet connection at the office. The room we rented had two double beds, a TV, a fridge and private bathroom. The room was clean and the beds were adequate.

You need to know that this hotel is an old fashioned family hotel. It
is not party central or an upscale Sheraton. If you live(d) near the New Jersey Shoreline, and stayed at the local hotels in Ocean City or
Wildwood, then you know what to expect. The decor is eccentric and artsy. This is definitely not a cold, white walled, puffy quilt type of place. It is a friendly, clean, basic accommodations hotel that has nice efficiencies and rooms. If one of the previous reviews left you leary about the rooms, then ask for a newly renovated room. Mick and Patty are renovating the place room by room. They also have plans
to redo the pool and other amenities.

There aren’t a whole lot of activities around the Tropi Rock other than the beach two blocks away. The restaurant choices are limited. We didn't have a car, so we walked to 9th Street (about six blocks away) and had great NY style pizza at Primanti Bros. for dinner ($20 large pizza, beer and tip- they don't deliver). We ate at Trini's (couple of blocks away) for lunch. Trini's food tasted good, but the service was really bad and it was expensive ($45 for two sandwiches, no drinks, and a kid's hot dog).

In conclusion, if you have a car, like a relaxed friendly atmosphere,
and don't mind basic accommodations, then stay at Tropi Rock. Tropi Rock is very affordable and a great pre-or post-cruise stay.

We really enjoyed our 1 night stay at Tropi-Rock. The owner was very accomodating and nice, we loved that they had their dog hanging out in the lobby, Oliver. We LOVE Dogs!! There were no problems checking in, our room was great, spacious, little efficiency- it really felt like an apartment, not a hotel room. The amenities were limited, but it was cute and different. It was 2 blocks away from the beach, so the location was great.
The bathroom definitely needs an updating but again, for the price and location, this is a great choice.
I really have no complaints.

I don't know who is writing these good reviews but they are very wrong. This place is little more than a run-down motel. And for what it is, overpriced.
