I don't see how anyone could not love this place.
My family and I just finished a week long stay at the Tropi Rock, and enjoyed the hotel a great deal. The efficiency room was large, clean, and uniquely decorated. The tropical pool was very scenic and well maintained. Mick and his family were very friendly, and made you feel welcome and at home. My children especially liked Oliver (the owner's Golden Retriever). We would definitely recommend the Tropi Rock and would stay there again.
This was a great hotel. Originally built or modified by an artist, it has some absolutely spectacular mosaic work throughout. Our room had mosaic and other original art. The price was great (about $100 in January on a weekend). It is an old hotel with simple facilities. It had wireless internet and several computers for common use. It also had a very small kitchenette if you were staying longer. And there were two tennis courts. A real find and a best buy.
The proprietor, Mick, was just helpful and friendly. When my wife asked a question about the wireless, Mick said another lady in the place had a new Mac like hers and could she help the lady - which she did. It had that family-run type of character. The location was a short walk from the beach and the action on the A1A - I went up and sat on the porch of a nearby bar drinking Rieslings and reading while watching the beach. The nearby Bonnet House is an incredible must-see very old tourist house of the rich and not-so-famous.
If, however, you are looking for a lap of luxury, plush hotel this isn't it.
I would clearly go back and have already recommended it to some friends and family.
Spent one night at the Tropi Rock on Jan 21st (yesterday, at the time of this writing!) .. and was impressed with the value for the ~$90/night fee. I'm not one of those "hang out at the hotel while on vacation" people .. we probably spent about 8 total hours in the room, and were asleep for most of that .. Took a quick dip in the pool, which was decent .. the owner Mick was super-nice and even typed up detailed directions to the airport for us this morning ! The place was hit pretty good by the hurricanes, but trust me the place is great and within 2 blocks of the beach .. he's got a couple computers connected to the net that are free to use, free coffee, towels for the pool, etc etc .. the room was very clean/comfortable and my favorite part was the decent water pressure in the shower !
Overall, next time i'm in lauderdale (and not for business), i'm definitely staying at Tropi... worth every penny of the $90 !!
e-mail me if you'd like, as i will probably not check the board .. jheadley@frontiernet.net.
The wife, kids and I stayed from dec.25th thru 28th and found Mick and his people totally great. The wife speaks very little english and he made her feel at home with his friendly smile and broken french...Great service from the cleaning staff and groundskeeper who went out of their way to provide anything needed. Rooms are comfy and clean, the garden is trying hard to get back from Wilma with the help of the gardener. Only set back during our stay, very little sunshine on the property except the tennis court this time of year because of the sun's inclination, and even the sun deck was unfortunatly closed because of Wilma. Regardless, excellent service you get your money's worth. Too bad we could not stay for the entire time we were in Ft.Lauderdale.
