We recently stayed at the Tropi Rock, based upon Trip Advisor reviews and were very pleased with our choice. On our trip to FL, we wanted to steer clear of touristy attractions and big, impersonal hotel chains and have more of a "real Florida" experience. The Tropic Rock was perfect for that. The hotel is small and warm, with Mick, the owner, greeting us, and his family's dog on the lobby's couch. Mick and his wife were very helpful with all our questions and gave us excellent recommendations for navigating the city and area. The hotel is older, but has been renovated with attention to details with colorful paint and lovely art work. We actually stayed in two different rooms, because we took an overnight trip to the Keys. The rooms were decorated differently, and both were clean and comfortable. We appreciated that we were able to leave our excess luggage in the hotel office while we were gone and retrieve it when we returned. There were other special touches that made this hotel a hidden treasure, like freshly blended coffee available at an outdoor seating area daily, videos to borrow in the lobby, and use of a computer and internet in an office area and wireless connection for laptops. The beach is a short walk, that while is not very scenic, didn't feel unsafe. We were also in walking distance to the Beach Plaza and enjoyed patio dining at the restaurants there. The hotel is certainly not a 5-star property - the bathrooms were small and not modern, the glass shower door didn't slide easily, there was no scenic view outside our window, and I wished I had real glasses in the room, as opposed to the plastic cups, but these were all minor inconveniences. The cost of the room was a great value that allowed us to spend our money on other things, and we enjoyed visiting with Mick and learning about the area, as opposed to being waited on by an impersonal clerk of a large hotel. We would definitely stay at the Tropi Rock, if we're ever in Fort Lauderdale again!
