Needed a place to spend the night before we boarded our cruise ship. It was easy to locate from I95 and close to the beach and the cruise port. This is a older hotel that is well cared for. The staff was pleasant and helpful. We were in easy walking distance from various shops and places to eat. Parking is street side which I didn't particulary care for, however the area proved to be safe and we had no problems. The rooms and furnishings are of a older period, but were
in good condition and very clean. Over all we were quite comfortable. No breakfast provided but there was plenty of good coffee available in the morning. I would definitly stay here again.

We originally planned to stay 5 night at this motel. We arrived late evening. Upon our arrival we were informed that we must pay up-front the hole amount for our stay. At this point I haven't seen the room yet!!
I felt uncomfortable with this, so I agreed to leave the motel next morning. The first night was paid when we made the reservation, so we could stay till morning. We checked in and received the room key and the remote control for the TV. The elevator (lift) was out of order, so we could take the stairs :)) The room was out-dated major work needed there. But definitely they were not short in messages left behind informing the traveler about their duties. One of them I find above the kitchenette sink. That informed me that in case that I dare to leave dirty dishes behind I will have to pay $10.00 ; other letter in the bathroom let me know that I cannot use the towel to wash my face, because my make-up will destroy the towel. Sure other fine here!!! The third and final note was on the entrance door which informed me about their precious(?) artwork, and they assured the reader that they will check out to see what's missing and again I am good to pay! No wireless connection in the room. I could only use my laptop in front of the reception. I needed to make a printed copy and I was charged 25 cents for it. The room was clean, this is the only positive thing about this motel!
The garden was over grown, the tables and chairs outdoor were rusty and dirty (I mean months and months not been cleaned)!
When we checked out next morning they demanded the remote control. They wanted me to go up and get it for them. I refused it, saying that they are more then welcome to claim the stairs and I wait at the desk....
I travel a lot and this was my worst experience ever with a motel. I would not recommend to anyone to stay here.

This place is an unbelievable value! Great property with a lot of artistic personality. Will stay here again!

  • Liked — It had a lot of personality, it is clean and you cannot beat the value. Way nicer than a lot of the hotel chain accommodations in the area.
  • Disliked — It was all good.

I used Trip Advisor to select this hotel for a 3 night pre-cruise stay. I selected the one bedroom suite which, for Fort Lauderdale is a great value at $120 per night. The room was large and included a full kitchen, king sized bed, large sitting area, stereo, TV, and full bathroom. Based on my experience at other local hotels, I think this one is rated lower than it should be.

The hotel is decorated in a tropical garden theme and the room's accoutrements reflect the outside courtyard. While the hotel is in the middle of the beach zone, once inside, you feel like you're miles away from civilization. The pool area is clean and lovely, a tropical oasis all its own and great if you don't want to walk 2 blocks to the beach (which is also really nice). Mick and his wife (as well as their pet golden retriever) are wonderful people and have all kinds of good information about area attractions and dining.

The fact of the matter is this: If you like staying in accommodations that are rustic, intimate, off the wall, quiet, and unique, this is the place for you. I am not going to lie and say it is antiseptically clean, but it is well kept. If you are looking for a noisy main stream hotel in the centre of all the action with lots of people in it, try the Beach Place towers. For my money, I'll come back to the Tropi Rock anytime!

  • Liked — The decor, peace and quiet, nice pool area, friendly owners
  • Disliked — Cleanliness (it's a little 'rustic', but that's pretty normal for Florida)

We recently stayed at the Tropi Rock, based upon Trip Advisor reviews and were very pleased with our choice. On our trip to FL, we wanted to steer clear of touristy attractions and big, impersonal hotel chains and have more of a "real Florida" experience. The Tropic Rock was perfect for that. The hotel is small and warm, with Mick, the owner, greeting us, and his family's dog on the lobby's couch. Mick and his wife were very helpful with all our questions and gave us excellent recommendations for navigating the city and area. The hotel is older, but has been renovated with attention to details with colorful paint and lovely art work. We actually stayed in two different rooms, because we took an overnight trip to the Keys. The rooms were decorated differently, and both were clean and comfortable. We appreciated that we were able to leave our excess luggage in the hotel office while we were gone and retrieve it when we returned. There were other special touches that made this hotel a hidden treasure, like freshly blended coffee available at an outdoor seating area daily, videos to borrow in the lobby, and use of a computer and internet in an office area and wireless connection for laptops. The beach is a short walk, that while is not very scenic, didn't feel unsafe. We were also in walking distance to the Beach Plaza and enjoyed patio dining at the restaurants there. The hotel is certainly not a 5-star property - the bathrooms were small and not modern, the glass shower door didn't slide easily, there was no scenic view outside our window, and I wished I had real glasses in the room, as opposed to the plastic cups, but these were all minor inconveniences. The cost of the room was a great value that allowed us to spend our money on other things, and we enjoyed visiting with Mick and learning about the area, as opposed to being waited on by an impersonal clerk of a large hotel. We would definitely stay at the Tropi Rock, if we're ever in Fort Lauderdale again!
