My son recently returned home from a six-month deployment to the Middle East. As he had some R&R leave to burn before returning to work, he treated me to a vacation in Fort Lauderdale. I am a widow and, therefore, do not travel as much as I did before my husband died. This vacation was a perfect reunion for me and my son and a wonderful place for my son to unwind from his tour of duty in the desert. We chose the Tropi Rock Resort for our FTL stay. In decades of traveling and cruising, I have never made a wiser choice. The Tropi Rock Resort is a tropical haven! This hotel is the best of everything. When I choose a hotel, I ask myself these things: Is the hotel clean? Is the staff efficient? Is the staff friendly? Are the furnishings comfortable? Is there anything that would make me want to return? Is there anything unique about the hotel? And finally----am I getting what I am paying for? Regarding the Tropi Rock, the answer to every single question is a resounding YES!Specific to our visit, the Tropi Rock not only met, but far exceeded, my criteria for a pleasant hotel stay. Immediately upon entering the hotel lobby, we were warmly greeted by John, the manager. John welcomed us and showed us to our rooms. More about John to follow.Shortly after checking in, we had the pleasure of meeting Mick, the hotel's owner. What can I say about Mick that can adequately describe him? Not nearly enough, I am sure. Mick is warm, knowledgeable about "all-things-Fort Lauderdale" and he always found time in his busy schedule to graciously answer any and all questions we had. He was always visible, always available, and he has a great sense of humor. He provided many light moments for us. His lovely wife, Patty, and his beautiful, polite children, Karina, Alex, and Christian can also be spotted around the hotel and on the grounds and are just as warm, friendly, and helpful as is Mick. The hotel's unofficial mascot, "Oliver", the family's gorgeous, well-trained golden retriever, was also quite a and beautiful. There are many varieties of tropical plants, flowers, and trees. I saw bananas, coconuts, bird-of-paradise, palms, ferns, and dozens of species I could not identify. There is art everywhere! There are fountains, waterfalls, and interesting statues. I did not personally use it, but there is a nice swimming pool with an inlaid mosaic fish design. There is an abundant supply of comfortable, attractive poolside furniture. Beverages and snacks are available in the reception area as well as a huge assortment of videocassette movies. There are tennis & shuffleboard courts, bbq grills, a terrific sundeck, and little niches here-and-there if you just want to escape and ponder your wise decision. If this is not enough, the gorgeous beach of Fort Lauderdale is only steps away!I had the occasion to call upon John several times during my stay. John is fantastic. This gentleman is a fountain of travel knowledge. He was able to make perfect restaurant suggestions, arrange for taxi & shuttle services, and advise us on area facilities and attractions. I had many chats with John on varying subjects. This man knows travel. John is multi-lingual, as is Patty (co-owner) and I heard a minimum of three languages being fluently spoken when required. In summary, the Tropi Rock is THE place to stay when in Fort Lauderdale. I realize that many people prefer the predictability of chain hotels with their cookie-cutter rooms and invisible staff, but I am not one of those people. It's true that chain hotels (usually) have no surprises. Conversely, they (usually also) have no charm. If you are looking for a wonderfully unique hotel at a great price, this hotel fits the bill to a "T". Many, many thanks to Mick, Patty, John, and everyone else at the Tropi Rock Resort for making this much-needed vacation one which I will always fondly remember.Mrs. Brenda Macomber
