We were looking for an affordable hotel, without having to sacrifice value and location. With today's travel costs, there wasn't much of a choice but our travel agent recommended the Yankee clipper for its location and beach front.
We were given a room accross the street from the main building, so like many people mention on their reviews here (which we had read prior to going), we had to treck across a walkway everytime we needed to go to the lobby or the beach. BUT I must say, maybe because we were prepared for the possibility of this, we really didn't mind so much. We figured, we're on vacation, what's the hurry, it's only an extra 10 minutes to walk to the beach, who cares...? Plus our room had great big windonws with full view of the beach accross the way.
The beach front really is great, and the location is fantastic, very very close to Las Olas Blvd and the wonderful Ft. Lauderdale never-ending beach front is priceless. However, my husband and I did have some problems. While we found some of the staff very friendly, some really were not that helpful. The business center they have available charges for using the internet and I had thought it was one of the included ammenities... not so. The hotel itself is a bit run-down and the rooms have definitely seen a lot of use. We had to change rooms at one point because I kept waking up with bites, and I had room service come and change the sheets right before we went to bed, thinking of course it was bed bugs... but the next day I had bites again... I called to complain and a manager as well as a security guard came to search the room and take a statement, they were very thorough and pulled the headboard out, checked everywhere but found nothing. They still however went ahead and switched our rooms, this time in the main building. The room was better but it was older, it was on the second floor, which led to an sort of courtyard/sitting area (which was REALLY noisy with people drinking on Saturday night) and it smelled of cigarette smoke. Not wanting to make more of a fuss and wanting to get on with our day we decided to just grin and bear it and head for the beach.
No more bug bites, still enjoyed the beach and our stay in Ft. Lauderdale was a LOT of fun. This hotel was very affordable compared to what we found at the time, especially for the location and it really was a decent stay.
