We stayed at the Bahia Mar two weeks prior to the biggest boat show in the world. We loved it here. The hotel was much as we expected, it is one of the older hotels along the beach and as such the decor reflects this. Although attempts have been made to brighten up the rooms with a lick of paint. Our experience of hotels in the US is that they are all pretty much the same - a lower standard than the UK - unless you want to pay the earth, so we were more than satisfied with what we found here.
The best thing about this hotel is the location. One of our biggest bug-bears is needing a hire car every time we go to the states but I'm happy to say we didn't need one here. The water taxi and local bus service up and down the beach was great and cost $5 and $2.50 for all day tickets. Most attractions are within walking distance or a short ride on the water bus. Taxis are expensive ($12 for a 4 mile ride, $60 for a 12 mile ride) so be careful.
If you stay prior to the boat show there is a lot of construction work going on around this hotel due to the massive preparations. Some of the local services are disrupted too but it didn't make a big difference. The hotel is the primary host to the boat show.
All in all we had a fabulous time here. We were supposed to move on to Miami for our last couple of days but didn't bother as the hotel was so accommodating, pleasant and provided us with great facilities. If we return to Ft.Lausderdale we wouldn't think twice about booking this place again.
