A hotel experience is very subjective. What one traveler finds paradise might be torturous to another, and vice versa. Having said that, the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort is not perfect, but it IS one of the better hotel experiences I've had in South Florida.
I returned this past week after an absolutely glorious stay last spring. I did find some unfortunate changes. The staff at check-in was vaguely disinterested that I had arrived- to the point that they didn't even ask if I wanted assistance with my luggage to my room (I didn't- but that's besides the point). My room was clean, but I wouldn't really say it had a thorough once-over before I arrived- one of the blankets had a musty odor, and it took 2 days to get it replaced! (more on housekeeping later).
The pool area is absolutely lovely- but heaven forbid you want the shade, AND wish to sleep past 8 am. The pool staff, who does do an admirable job, needs to do better. The policy is that lounges left unused for 1 hour would be freed up for other hotel guests. That's terrific, but the staff should have done a better job of patroling and keeping track of the lounges. Tagging them is great- but not if staff neglects to be vigilent about abandoned lounges.
Back to housekeeping- they need a serious attitude check! I was out of my room between 10 and 3 on the first day of my vacation. When I returned, my room still hadn't been made up! I called housekeeping, who assured me that someone would be right there. Nearly 2 hours later, when I decided to shower, I put out the "do not disturb" sign. THAT'S when they decided to show up- a fact I learned from 4 rather annoying phone calls from housekeeping. Needless to say, I never did get my room cleaned that day- and the experience was similar the next day (when I was finally, begrudgingly, handed a new blanket- yes HANDED- to replace the musty one).
There's a lot of good about this hotel also. First, a lot has been said about it not being near to anything. Personally, I drive enough all year- I'm good with staying on the hotel property. The beach is beautiful, the pool, although it has it's problems, is well maintained, and it really is a great place to simply rewind all day long. The food, though pricey, is quite good- especially the pool side restaurant which has great sandwiches and salads, as well as typical "beach fare" (hamburgers, franks, chicken). If you want a light dinner, just pick up a sandwich or salad and squeeze it into the mini bar for later!
Room service food is great- we had the grilled salmon one night, and one could not hope for a better presented meal. I read a lot of gripes about the price of the food- but seriously, if you rent a car, pay to park it every day ($21!) just so you can get a cheaper meal- why bother? I would rather stay put and sample all the goodies at the excellent restaurants.
The hotel, while showing its age, is in the middle of a renovation due to be completed in the fall- I fully expect that a total overhaul will accompany that renovation (meaning staff attitude). All in all, this is a good property, and I would stay here again.
