We had a fantastic time in Fort Lauderdale. Some of the comments about reception staff are fair, but it does seem to depend which individual is on reception. When we arrived we were put in a room overlooking a building site, we requested to change room, but were basically told to go away, on the second day of our vacation when woken at 7-8am by construction work, we were determined to be changed. Luckily this time there was a much better receptionist who immediatley moved us to an Ocean view room for the remainder of our stay. That room was lovely and the view, wow, just loved it.
We used a car to get everywhere so did not face some of the problems mentioned with location. I-Hop and Mc Donalds proved good breakfast options for us and the food by the pool is a little expensive but really good. We never got around to trying the hotel for dinner as there is so much in the area. My favorite evening eateries were "The cheescake factory" and "Outback Steakhouse", these are both a lovely novelty if you're over from the UK.
We spent a lot of time shopping whilst in the US, the mall in Fort Lauderdale was quite good, I loved sawgrass mills outlets and we found a fantastic mall as you drive into Miami, unfortunately I forget the name. If you're a young professional and don't work in the US, I recommend Express for fantastic womens smart trousers and for casual wear Abercrombie and Fitch is a must.
One downfall was when we were leaving we got charged for parking, even though our package entitled us to free parking. Luckily thanks to Trip advisor I knew this may happen, so had a print out of the page from our tour operator stating that parking was included at no extra charge. Reception apologised and re-funded us.
