Beautiful, stylish, well-maintained and well-managed hotel. I cannot say enough good things about the place. The joint even smells wonderful. I can't explain that; you'll have to visit to get it.
The property is located at the edge of some of the most beautiful and expensive residential real estate in south Florida: $1-7 million homes with private docks and 50-100 foot yachts. Most rooms have what can only be described as "millionaire views".
OBSERVATIONS:
The hotel's promos indicate it has a hot tub and sauna. Neither is the case. Doesn't matter. The pool area is stunning and more than you'll need or want, anyway.
Some reviewers complained about breakfast at the hotel's restaurant, China Grill. China Grill is an expensive, high concept Asian-fusion chain restaurant. It offers breakfast. Why anyone would think to have breakfast at an expensive, high concept Asian-fusion restaurant is beyond me. Do you go to Denny's for the Italian dishes? Next question.
No. There is nothing for kids to do here apart from the pool. There were kids at the Grande, all having a good time, but none of them "catered" to by the hotel. There are other hotels in Fort Lauderdale for that.
The rooms are NOT small. They are the standard size Americans expected before Embassy Suites started in with the idea you couldn't possibly have a decent time in anything less than 750 square feet and a full kitchen.
TIPS:
The hotel is owned/operated by the same folks who own/operate the Pier 66 and Bahia Mar hotels in Fort Lauderdale. Pier 66 is right next to the Grande. This is where you go for spa amenities, e.g., sauna and hot tub and massage, etc. Bahia Mar is right on the beach. Guests of the Grande can park for free at the Bahia Mar and enjoy the beach without having to find a parking space or pay for it.
Breakfast: There's a Starbucks and Einstein Bagels about 1/4 mile west of the Grande on the same side of the street. There's a clean, friendly, well run Denny's at the corner of 17th Street and U.S. 1, about 1 mile from the hotel, open 24 hours. Forget China Grill. You can get an American breakfast at Denny's for $7.
Some rooms have better views than others. Some rooms in the West Villa face the 17th Street Causeway. It's not as grim as it sounds, but it also isn't the ideal vacay view. Pay $10-20 more per night and get a room that face the pool area, the intracoastal, or the ocean (about 1 1/2 miles away).
