I must first say I am not accustomed to staying at "resorts". I have never stayed at a Ritz or like properties, so if you are used to such places this review will not benefit you much. Having said this, Lago Mar was absolutely perfect. My family of four (two kids under 8) booked three days here after a family reunion cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale. It was the perfect ending to a cruise that was not as relaxing as planned. The outdoor areas of Lago Mar are tremendous, the meandering pool gives plenty of wall space for each unsure kid to stay close to "safety" and most others can touch (much of the pool is only 3'5" deep. There is another, separate, pool that goes to 9' (seemed mostly adults and older kids hung out there). A playground, nice putt-putt course, shuffleboard, and ping-pong table were available for free use. Several tennis courts were available for a nominal fee. There was plenty of seating everywhere with many shaded options. The two enticing hammocks were too close to the playground (read as within flying sand range) and were often occupied.
The staff at Lago Mar were great. Most everyone was eager to lend assistance and seemed genuinely friendly as opposed to the perma-grin "I'm a happy employee of this resort" type. Every encounter with staff was a pleasure.
Food - I must say that I was worried about the eating situation. I had read food was expensive and going off-site was quite a trip. My kids don't have a very diverse palate and often demand such fine quisine as McDonalds. I was relieved by how the scenario played out. Each time we had a full meal, it ended up being about $50, but being able to walk across the pool lagoon or to a covered table and eat good food was more than worth leaving th resort, even if we had a rental car (which we did not). We typically ordered pizza from the grill for my son and then sat near the Promenade bar at the pool and ordered from the short but good menu. I felt the food was a good value. Additionally, the virgin strawberry daquiries were super-tasty and served "slurpee-style" and had gummy bears on top...very handy as bribes for when the kids started getting tired..er, cranky from the long days in the sun.
We stayed in the older section of the hotel and loved it. The suite was very large and comfortable. The sliders and windows were virtually soundproof as well. We checked in very early and were expecting to just be able store our bags and wait for our room. However, our room was not ready yet, so they gave us a room with a view of the pool and ocean in one (we paid for a pool view).
We live on the west coast and wish Lago Mar could be transported out here...I would revisit every year guaranteed.
On a last note, the nice lady in the resort shop - which by the way had outrageously priced items ($38 tee-shirts will never cover this body) - said the Ritz was courting Lago Mar and that they "really wanted it". She reported most of the buildings would be torn down if acquired. It would be such a shame to change Lago Mar. I am sure that many people would enjoy the Ritz, because they don't seem to have problems filling them around the world, but Lago Mar is such an anomaly in a resort these days. Being at a place where it seemed many types could fit in was very refreshing. I am partial to the family owned businesses and hope Lago Mar will not sell out. Stay here before it changes!
