“Superb Accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2010

We spent a week at this hotel and couldn't have chosen a better one. The hotel has plenty of old Florida charm. It is just four floors high, so not an eye sore as many newer buildings. It is built all around a beautiful swimming pool, has direct access to an amazing beach, very well kept gardens all around the pool. The hotel is stylish, elegant, perfectly clean and very well maintained. The hotel seems to be great for a couple's romantic retreat as well as for families, there were several families with kids and seemed quite happy with the beach and pool.
The decor is nice and classic, so if you're looking for sleek design and contemporary style go somewhere else. The staff is extremely courteous and quick, so we were very very pleased with the service. We once called room service and they delivered what we asked in a minute, very impressive. Also the cleaning ladies did a superb job with our room, in spite of all the sand that we inevitably brought in with us. The room was large, nice, comfortable, and impeccably clean. Free wifi everywhere (including room) was very useful and worked well.
The Lago Mar is a Florida classic, an absolute gem, I would go back there in a heartbeat, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

We stayed at Lago Mar with our two children ages 2 and 7. The resort was recommended to us from friends in our town. I wasn't sure what to expect given a range of mixed reviews on TripAdvisor however we were pleasantly surprised. The grounds and rooms are immaculate. The location is unbeatable...right on the beach with endless sand and off the beaten path. The pool was fun for the kids...and they loved the mini golf course and the play grounds. During our stay the hotel was not crowded but those who were there were older repeat visitors and families with small kids. The other guests we met were very pleasant and our children made lots of friends. Many have complained about the gratuity...it didn't bother us and we had no negative reaction when we chose not add additional tips. I thought the prices were very reasonable and the food was good. We ate at the main dining room and had a nice dinner (with a very good kids menu) and ate at the pool bar most days. Drinks were not over the top in price. Some have been critical of only using a room key for purchase...we found it to work out for the best. It restricted outsiders from coming to the resort and eliminated taking cash when we left the room. Our room , an executive suite, was a wonderful size with a separate bedroom, kitchenette, and living area with a nice balcony overlooking the pool. We stopped at a grocery store on our way to the hotel and grabbed some "supplies" and the kitchenette came in very handy. Although the decor is outdated a bit and some of the hotel is showing it's age, I appreciated the "old florida" charm of this place. It is not the W, it is not the Ritz, but it is classy, warm, and family friendly. It has a history and a charm that can't be found in many chain hotels. We felt this was a great place to get away as a family and simply relax. Although restaurants are a cab ride away...it is not expensive to get to the main areas. We ate out twice..once on Los Olas and once at Shula's at the Westin...not a long cab ride at all. Michael the bartender is very friendly and he doubles as the resort photographer. Although it did not work out to for us to get photos taken (very disappointing!), I saw several examples of his work and it is great. We were sad to leave and hope to return. My only suggestion...I would urge the hotel management to schedule more family/guest activities during the day and early evenings. Crafts, games, movie night, beach bbq's would encourage guests and children to mingle more and make more of a connection. It did rain some during our stay and our only "activity" was a rented movie and swimming in the rain! Lago Mar is a wonderful place to relax as a family.

In the day am sure this was a great place to stay. Not close to any restaurants, therefore, you must have a car to get around.

18% gratuity added to everything -- even a bottle of water - that's just crazy.

The spa services weren't great. There was only one steam room in women's locker which doesn't make much sense.

We were a little late arriving at the spa and the spa concierge seemed annoyed with us and they actually cut the hour massage to a 50 minute massage (because we were late).
The nail technicians were rude speaking Spanish amongst themselves and then all huggy for a "tip I suppose."

The food was just okay - nothing over the top!

The best part was having the beach right there and that was primarily what we were there for!

I would most definintely not stay at this hotel ... try the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas ... lots of good restaurants walking distance and some decent shops (although las Olas has changed also for the worse).

My friend who lives in Fort Lauderdale has been trying to get me to come down and stay at her beach club, the Lago Mar for years. Since my family and I only had a few days for spring break, it seemed like a good idea since I wanted someting that was fast and easy to get to. We live only a few minutes from the Westchester County airport and Lago Mar is only 15 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale airport. An early morning Jet Blue flight had us there in time for a late lunch.
The first thing that sets Lago Mar apart from the other hotels is location - directly on the beach - no highway to cross over. The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood with other beach clubs next to it so the beach doesn't get nearly as crowded as the area further north.
For a family with younger kids,it's perfect with 2 pools, tennis courts, mini-golf, shuffle board, a playground in the sand with hammocks, and a soda shop.
The people couldn't be more friendly. The food is very good. There's a buffet breakfast that's a bargain. Our suite was spacious with a living room with a pullout sofa, flat screen tv and small kitchen area. The master bedroom was a good size with a large bath.
Even my teen aged son had a good time. I'm sorry I waited so long to try this place out. It was a pleasure from start to finish.

Lago Mar is a place that I prefer to keep a secret! It was truly a home away from home. We knew of other people who have stayed there off and on over several years and now we know why! The old Florida ambiance, the location, the amenities, safety and outstanding service cannot be beat. I feel that we would not be doing a fair justice if we did not compliment those who made our stay special! The conceriege, Ron and several others that I feel badly that I do not remember their names, the spa service..I received a fantastic facial, the housekeeping services and especially Fran, at the Soda Shop. Fran was like leaving family behind and I almost came close to shedding some tears at our goodbye! To wrap it up and make my point...My goodbye is only a "so long" for we will definately be back like everyone else...year after year!! Thank you for our memorable stay!!

We stayed here for three nights before boarding ship on a Panama Canal cruise. It was delightful. The room, restaurant, staff and amenities were all exceptional. We were sad to leave even though we were about to have a wonderful cruise. Sipping coffee on our private balcony while watching our ship (Celebrity Infinity) arrive early on a Sunday morning was a thrill. We are going back this spring.

Impressive setting; gracious, friendly staff; choices for dining - we really enjoyed our room, the pool, and the beach. We have stayed at several luxury hotels in Ft. Lauderdale. Lago Mar tops our list of where to stay. We shall return.
