My husband and I wanted to stay one night in a fancy, romantic resort on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, and after reading lots of reviews, I settled on Lago Mar. The resort is located in a more secluded area, not too far from Port Everglades.
The minute the cab pulled up the drive, I knew I had made a good choice. We were immediately greeted by a staff member who took our bags to the lobby. It was only about 11:15 a.m., and I was very happy that our room was already available. The woman at the front desk who checked us in was very kind and professional. She handed us a map of the resort and explained some of its highlights.
Since we were only staying for one night, we splurged and got a suite with a balcony that overlooked the lagoon pool. The suite was beautifully decorated in a tropical motif. The bedroom had a king-size bed, plenty of closet space, and two dressers. The bathroom had a tub/shower combo. We also had a large sofa, dining table, and kitchenette. I had a great night of sleep on a fairly firm mattress, and we were able to sleep in late (something I usually find difficult at hotels).
The grounds at Lago Mar are beautiful. There are two pools with a bar and a rental desk conveniently located between them. There were lots of children playing in the lagoon pool, so if you're looking for more quiet and/or privacy, I'd suggest the other pool. And, of course, there's the Atlantic Ocean and private beach right there at the resort. You can rent out chairs and cabanas, if you'd like. The resort also has hammocks, shuffleboard, a playground for the kids, a mini putting green, and tennis.
We didn't take advantage of the spa, but we did try out a couple of dining spots there. The Oceanside Grill is a good place to go for a quick bite while you're at the pool/beach. The Soda Shoppe is nice for a late-night snack or to fulfill your ice cream cravings. We had an excellent dinner at Acquario. However, the food prices, in my opinion, were on the high side. What's more, the resort does not take cash for anything. All purchases are charged to your room, and no matter what you buy--whether it's a bottle of water or a 3-course meal--you are automatically charged 18% gratuity. That adds up pretty quickly.
My husband and I were very pleased with the Lago Mar, but I don't think it's a place we could afford to stay at for more than a couple of nights. The main drawback to staying there was not the hotel itself, but the number of spoiled children who seemed to be staying there. I found myself rolling my eyes on a couple of occasions where parents didn't discipline their kids, but this could happen anywhere. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway with a very helpful and friendly staff, lots of amenities, and beautiful scenery, then I highly recommend the Lago Mar Resort and Club.
