A lovely resort, though quite pricey. Did not think it as well suited to families as other places we have stayed. During winter break in February there were over 250 children at the resort and they had virtually no organized activities around the pool or on the grounds. On two of the days they canceled the one activity (a sand castle contest and mini golf) due to impending bad weather (that never occurred). When several parents inquired about the activities (or lack thereof) we received vague assurances from the activities people at the hotel. The upshot was, that because Florida children do not have winter break, the hotel does not recognize it or do anything special for families...although they do have quite a lot of activities at Easter Break (we were told how wonderful the activities were at Easter break). Although a lovely setting and though the pool and playground were nice, I did not think this hotel went out of their way WHATSOEVER for families...the "fancy" restaurant was overpriced and not particularly good. Service there was lousy and slow...the soda shop was the best place to eat...very tasty grub!
These rooms are expensive(well over $350 per night minimum) for which you get nothing other than a room. A bit of family entertainment after dinner or during the day wouldn't have dug too deeply into their income statement. Our kids are 7 and 10 years old

My husband and I just got back from 5 nights at the Lago Mar. This is a beautiful resort in an expensive residential area. First of all let me say that our room was just huge! We stayed in the executive suite, which boasted a huge bedroom, 2 full bathrooms, a small kitchenette, and a full livingroom with balcony. I was hoping the room would look more like the pictures on the website , but I was happy with the size. I think only some of the rooms are newly renovated. I thought the room was clean, but not brand new. The rest of the resort is well maintained and new looking. The pool area was a little smaller than it looked in the photos, but I was still happy with it. The beach is great, and as other reviewers wrote, certain chairs are $10 each. The wood lounge chairs are free as are towels. I agree that a resort should never charge you for chairs, but they do offer some options. The pool bar was terriffic, but pricy(aren't they all...). I would suggest this hotel to families, and couples only. You are off the beaten path, which is nice, but if you are young and looking to party you have to drive to the main area. When we were there, there was a lot of families, seniors, and couples. Very quite, except for the kids. There is a lot to do, tennis, mini golf, volleyball, playground for the kids, fitness center and a spa (my favorite). We will stay there again for sure! Make sure you go to Las Olas Blvd!!

We spent a week at the Lago Mar in May and had a wonderful time. There are several reasons to recommend it. First, it is one of the few hotels in Fort Lauderdale that are in a quiet residential area, away from the traffic and noise on A1A. The pool area (2 pools) is well laid out and offers shade, sun and an ocean view. There was a grill near by, along with a poolside bar. The rooms were big, nicely decorated and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen area (sink, stove, microwave and full size fridge) came in handy but lacking in utensils and dishes. The locations was convenient to downtown and the airport. Lots of recreational activities for couples and families alike. What were the minuses? The poolside bedrooms are located along a loud and busy walkway so early risers walking and talking can easily wake a sound sleeper. I would strongly recommend that they include some type of "white noise", either a radio that includes that feature, or even a portable fan. The ocean beach is private and beautiful but the hotel charges guests $20/day for a chair! That is a policy that any good hotel should immediately do away with. Because we went in Spring, we received a very reasonable rate of $169. If you go during peak season, they charge over $300/night and I would expect service and amenties to match the price and the hotel doesn't quite have the "stuff" for that kind of price.

Just returned from 3 nights at the Lago Mar. I would highly recommend it. We arrived the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and the place was very crowded with families. The staff was clearly stretched to the limit but despite the rush they gave us a space to store our luggage, change and allowed full use of the facilities until the room was ready. The room was fantastic. We had a 1st floor beach front unit. I usually don't like first floor as you lose some privacy but it was amazing to open the front door and walk on to the beach. The room was huge with a large living area, kitchenette, separate bedroom and 2 full baths. Its more like a condo than a hotel room. The bed was on par to the one we had at the Kahala Mandarian Oriental in Hawaii and Four Seasons in Austin which is saying a lot. By Monday and definately by Tuesday the place really thined out and we were one of just a handful of people by the pool and/or beach. The beach was very nice and you can walk it for miles. I don't know if the place is worth the high season prices but for off-season it is a great value. You also need to be at least kid tolerant as there are many familes with small children. If you crave solitude at the pool best look elsewhere or at least don't go during holiday periods.
