“We loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2009

A very fine, comfortable and family friendly hotel located on the beach.
We stayed here for 3 nights in July 2008, and we loved this hotel!!

The hotel had a big parking lot, quick check in, friendly staff, and well-sized suite with separate living room. Our suite had a nice view over the swimming pool, beach and ocean.

Our suite was very nice, specious, well decorated and had to large beds, a small kitchenette, and a balcony. Except that our room needed some renovation, the balcony could have been nicer, did we feel very comfortable and enjoyed our suite.

The best with the hotel is the large and family friendly pool, free activities as miniature golf, playground, and a very nice private beach.

The hotel is located a well distance from noisy traffic, loud bars and clubs.

We loved it! This one of the best family hotel we have stayed in, and we will mostly come back to Lago Mar soon.

I was very impressed with the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Access to the beach was great. The beach was nice and quiet. Definitely a family hotel though. My boyfriend and I went on a romantic getaway and it was perfect for us. There weren't too many young couples there - mostly families with young kids but it was still great. Had to take a taxi ($10-15) at night to go out but it was worth to do that but stay somewhere right on the beach at a nice place (that was cheaper than most other comparable hotels in the area). If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay, this is it!

The physical building was very nice as was the beach, but that was the saving grace of this hotel. The rooms were very dated, and the service was unpolished and distracting. I drove around for 20 minutes trying to find the hotel, waited 10 minutes to check in (there was no one ahead of me - the place was empty). the room service after 11 p.m. was served in a stryfoam container with no utensils, the alarm clock went off at 1:30 a.m. (though I did not set it), the TV was supposedly a brand new flat screen but was snowy and had lines running through it, supposedly I was told of the 11 a.m. check out at check-in, but the time posted in the room was 12 noon, and the manager called at 11:20 to ask when I was leaving, I called the valet to bring my car around and he called back to ask what kind of car I had (the hotel doesn't issue tickets.) Best of all, I asked what sort of Internet access they had and I was told "browser." Ha! This seems like a very homegrown place and I would have preferred to stay at a professionally run hotel - Hilton, Marriott, or something of the like. Good luck if you decide to stay here!

Spent 4 nights at the Lago Mar in early April with the family and we had an overall great experience with one particular aggravation I'll get to shortly. Check-in was quick and painless - we got there early coming off a cruise and they were able to accomodate us which was great. Had a room overlooking the beach, and as others have noted, yes the rooms are a little dated in decor but they are spacious and have everything you need, including free wifi. The pool, beach, and surrounds were all very nice and the clientele were an interesting mix of Europeans and well-heeled Americans. We rented a car with the assistance of the hotel and that worked out great - concierge and bell staff were very helpful and the car was delivered to us in short order. Unless you don't mind trekking 1 1/2 miles up and back along the beach then you will absolutely need wheels to get out to restaurants and bars on the strip. We ate at the hotel restaurant one night, sitting out on a beautifully lit terrace by the pool -- we found the food (progressive Italian) and the service surprisingly good. The resort has a great stretch of beach - but charging extra coin for a standard chaise lounge vs the ones that look like they've been sitting out there since 1950...that's gouging. The Marriott Harbour Beach is a short beach walk away and was noticeably more crowded (not in a good way) in comparison. But the Marriott definitely has more beach sport activites available for kids than the Lago Mar. Now, about those Towelistas. Unlike the rest of my family I am an early riser and like to roam around the property, grab a cup of coffee and sit by the pool, reading the paper while waiting for my family to get up. Early each morning I would witness individual guests placing towels, books, hats, or what-have-you, down on entire swathes of pool chairs in (of course) prime locations, only to return to the comfort of their rooms and return with their groups/families hours later. Look, I'm no resort virgin, - I've seen this routine in plenty of places all over the world, but I've never seen it exercised at quite this level. You could literally find yourself walking out to the at 10:30 or even 11:00am and not be able to find a decent place to set down - and there was nobody there! Just their towels. The smug sense of entitlement of the folks doing this at the Lago Mar was nothing short of stunning. But frankly, I blame the hotel - people are going to do whatever they can get away with - it's up to the hotel to figure out how to resolve it. But overall, this didn't spoil our stay, we did enjoy our visit to the Lago Mar and would definitely come back, but the hotel has got to step up and do something about the Towelistas.

My wife & I spent 4 nights here after a drive up from 3 nights in Key West and a day at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. Our room at Lago Mar, on the 4th floor, was fine. We ate at a number of restaurants in the area, Pazzo's, 15th St Fishery (twice at the dockside area where huge tarpon swim beneath you & the beer is 2 for one weeknights) & Jackson's, they were all very good and close by. A car is a must. The beach is lovely, staff were all friendly. You are not on the A1A "strip" but over a mile from it, so your nights are quiet.
The only "negative"experience is one caused solely by timing. We arrived on a Friday & departed Tuesday. Lago Mar is a "Resort" for those of us renting a room or suite, it is also a "Club" for the thousands of condo unit owners in the area who pay an annual "club membership" to use the Lago Mar facilities. From the Lago Mar point of view this is a stable income that I am sure allows them to upkeep the beautiful grounds & beach. From a paying Resort user point of view, your trip to the pool(s) can seem like a walk through a Don DeLillo novel. Smoking, cell phone shouting, self important 30 somethings, receiving calls from their spouses 300 ft away on the beach, shouting at Buffy to call his sister back to the pool, you just had to be there. The beach is more tranquil, but the Atlantic can be rough when the winds blow in. Club members usually leave around dinner time & are back the next morning taking up all the free parking spaces in front of the hotel and grabbing the chairs at both pools. They were all gone by Monday, finally peace. Perhaps it was because it was a spring weekend and many schools across the country were still out.
Our children are grown, our 30 something moments are past and we were looking for some quiet time that did not arrive until Monday. Some other time maybe.

I was looking for a nearby locale for a short getaway (I live in Broward County) and found Lago Mar. It seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. From the moment we arrived, it was the right choice. The staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The hotel is a little out of the way but just follow their directions or Map Quest it. It's the fact that its located in a residential area, away from the madness on A1A, that made it perfect. While there are very nice hotels on the " A1A strip", they all share a common problem - you have to cross A1A to get to a public beach. Lago Mar has a PRIVATE Beach.

Even tho we were early, our room was ready. We had an Executive Suite with a balcony that had a view of the beach and ocean beyond. It looked like it had been recently redone with Tommy Bahama-ish furnishings. There was a small kitchen, microwave and fridge in the room. We didn't use it but handy if traveling with little ones. Probably a 32" plasma TV in the sitting room and a smaller one in the bedroom, mounted high so it was easy to watch from the bed.

The on premises reataurant offers indoor and al fresco dining for three meals a day. In the evening it transforms into a Northern Itailian inspired place. Proper attire is required for dinner, I wore a sport coat but no tie. It looks out on the pool and the ocean behind. We both had the chicken with prosciutto and lemon butter sauce. They also have a nice wine cellar and an attractive bar.

The absolute best feature is the private beach. Towels, chairs umbrellas and cabanas are available ($20 per day for a cabana and lounge chairs). Because it's a private beach foor and drink service is available without ever having to leave your cabana. You can also choose to sit under a plam tree an the beach as well. They have two pools with a snack bar and tiki bar nearby. Pleanty of amenties for children also available. There is a health club and spa. We took a couples massage at the spa.

There are many fine restaurants nearby on Las Olas Blvd or on A1A just north of the hotel. We chose Grill 66. Snow crabs were still in season and we had 12'', yes you read that right 12", claws for an appetize. Had never seen stone crab claws that big. Absolutely delicious! Entrees were good but oh my those crabs claws.

In short this was the perfect place for a getaway and I would definately return for a hopefully longer stay next time.

My family and I (a 9 month old and an almost 3 year old) selected the Lago Mar for it's location and supposed 4 star reputation. Let me first say that the property is beautiful and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and family focused. The grounds allow for children to play as well as for adults to relax. The beach is very large and lovely. The lagoon pool is spacious and shallow enough for little ones to swim. There is also a "beach side" pool which is larger and deeper. The negatives are as follows: Rooms are dated and need updates. The furniture is scuffed and has scratched paint. My son's bed had a tear in the sheet. We booked an executive suite with a connecting room. It was convenient, but not luxurious. The kitchenette has a small refrigerator and a microwave which is enough. Room service food is average at best. The poolside restaurant menu is basic and a bit boring. The taste of the food is again average. The beachside grill offers good hamburgers. The soda shop is quaint and offers some basic necessities. Overall, the location is not convenient if you do not rent a car. The property is isolated and not near restaurants or shopping. Taxi cabs in FLL are slow and not reliable.
