“Dear Lago Mar, never change!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

We've been coming to the Lago Mar in the summer for about 7 years now. What I love about it is that it really caters to everyone, young and old. My kids love it. It has so many things going for it - beautiful but not over the top rooms, easy access to the beach, great pools, putt-putt, gorgeous grounds, etc. Here's where I think it stands out though: while you could eat at the hotel's several dining options (and different price ranges which is nice) it's a short drive away to many good restaurants; while it's kid-friendly it's not geared only to kids by any means; the staff - many of whom have been there for years - are SO nice; you feel like you're in luxury but the place, staff and clientele are not snobby or pretentious; you feel catered to but not bothered every minute; the prices for drinks and food are not ridiculous like at some resorts. And we love the counter service at the soda shop, the store with various things, the ice cream, the free beach chairs. It's the little things like the old-fashioned counter service mentioned, the steel drum guy, the friendliness of the staff, the beauty of the place that make this place our favorite.

Room Tip: I'd ask for a room with a beach view. The ones facing the pool are also great, and the higher o...

When it comes to living in South Florida, there are so many options for mini-vacations nearby. My husband surprised me for my birthday by taking me to the place where we spent our first night together as a married couple: The Lago Mar! We absolutely love this place! Great for special occassions! Their beach is superb as well as the food available in their restaurant. The rooms are luxurious and the views can be breathtaking.

The night we got married we stayed here before heading out to the Caribbean and they upgraded us to a Suite for free!! They were really helpful in making it a truly special occassion.

Thank you Lago Mar!!

My family (including two boys aged 15 and 11) just returned from a week vacation at Lago Mar. We selected Ft. Lauderdale and Lago Mar because the property is similar to the all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, but we were able to leave the hotel whenever we wanted to explore the area, which keeps the kids more entertained.

The property is a continual renovation of a set of older connected buildings. We stayed in a one-bedroom executive suite, which is in one of the older buildings. I've stayed in a regular hotel room before, which is the newest building, and found our suite to be larger, but it didn't quite have the same upscale feeling the new hotel room had. It was still very nice though and the separate living room was nice when someone wanted to stay up late or woke up early. Room came with a microwave, small refrigerator and a small sink and we had some dishes, flatware and glasses too. Excellent public spaces, especially the lobby. The private beach was huge. You could have the blue and white cloth chairs and chaise lounges for free, but an umbrella and 2 vinyl strap chaise lounges costs $25/day. The pools were both extremely nice, with plenty of places to find shade. It being off season, you could find a place at the pool pretty easily, but sometimes it was hard to find more than two places together if you arrived after noon as people put their towels down and then leave for hours. Drinks by the pool were well made, but many cost $10/drink plus tip ($6 for a beer), so we were pretty moderate as that adds up quickly. You can walk north up the beach for miles if you're so inclined.

Food was very good, but wasn't cheap, as you'd expect at a nice resort. We bought the bed and breakfast package, which gave you two passes per day for the breakfast buffet, which was very very nice. Fantastic pancakes and omlettes made fresh for you. I saw others order waffles and french toast too. Nice displays of fruit, meats and cheeses and the typical American breakfast foods, of which I particularly enjoyed the corn beef hash. To save money and break the monotony of eating the same foods every day, we found out that the restaurant would let us use yesterday's tickets for the next day, so we could bring our kids along for free too (but you can't spend tomorrow's tickets today). You were still charged tax and expected to tip on the full price of the meal, so it wasn't exactly free given that the brunch goes for $18/adult and $7/child under 12. Service was always friendly, but at a near Carribean pace, so remember you're on vacation or leave extra time if you've got places to be. Lunches were also good. Great burgers, nice salads and other sandwiches too. You could eat breakfast and lunch either indoors or out. There's a separate snack bar near the beach that had a much more limited menu - the biggest difference for me was the burger was fresh at the restaurant but had been frozen at the snack bar. We never did eat dinner at the resort, though I'm sure it was quite good. They offered a $35 price fixe meal that included a salad and dessert, but it was too fancy to interest either of our kids. If you have a car, there are tons of restaurants along 17th Street and Tripadvisor and other social media did a good job of steering us to many of them. It's a short trip to the Las Olas restaurant district and you could walk to the beach strip if you really wanted to.

My boys and I very much enjoyed the mini golf course and ping pong table and both were readily available. Kids kept ripping the rubber covers off the paddles, but we saw new paddles a few times through the week. There was also shuffleboard and a nice swing set. I will comment that I've never experienced so many well behaved children. I honestly never saw any kids being loud or intrusive. Many of the hotel guests were European tourists, especially from Germany, so maybe that had something to do with that.

A few quibbles:
Our beds were not very comfortable and I woke up with a sore back most mornings (and I don't have back problems). My younger son slept on the sofa bed in the living room so he could have his own room, and that was quite uncomfortable, as are most sofa beds.

The TV channel lineup was really limited. No A&E, Animal Planet, Discovery, etc, which are all favorites of our kids.

All in all, we had a wonderful time and would consider joining the large group of guests who return frequently.

Room Tip: Look at the hotel website for a somewhat hidden map of the rooms so you can see where your type of r...

I was looking for a hotel to stay in just one night, as our plane landed very late and we were headed to the Keys (a 3+ hour drive.) Typically we stay at a nearby Marriott. I found Lago Mar, did some research, it looked good and booked it for 3 nights. We will definitely be back as we had a great time!

We had a pool view room/suite. It had a separate bedroom with king size, very comfy bed, closet, and full bathroom. The main room had a couch that pulled out to two twin beds...there was enough separation that my 11 year old daughter and 13 year old son were fine sleeping there. There was a small kitchen, kitchen table, and another half bath. The balcony had a comfortable lounge chair and a couple of regular chairs and a table. We overlooked the putt putt course, shuffle board, and we could see the pool. Even had a glimpse of the ocean!

The staff are super friendly and helpful! Everyone from the housekeepers to bartenders, to servers. We are used to friendly hospitality, as we go to the Caribbean often, and we really experienced that at Lago Mar (don't usually get that in the US.) The beach was wonderful...so clean and beautiful water. There were plenty of comfortable chairs for free. You could also rent an umbrella and chairs for $25. Kids spent hours in the ocean. I loved watching the cargo ships and cruise ships come and go, as the channel is just a bit down the beach.

The amenities are great! Two pools (a bit tough to find chairs during prime sun time), several restaurants (yummy food), tennis, shuffle board, putt putt, a pool bar, volleyball, hammocks, and play equipment. Plenty of towels given out generously. We didn't get to the spa or gym.

We booked professional photography with Mike and are thrilled with our photos! Some how he managed to take great pictures with stubborn kids who didn't always want to smile. He was great to work with and get to know. And now we have our pictures for our Christmas card!!

Bottom line...Lago Mar was a wonderful place for our family and we have a new tradition. We go to the Keys almost yearly and now will start that vacation with a few days at Lago Mar.

Room Tip: Suites are great for families.

We went here for my birthday long weekend vacation. Driving up to the resort my husband and I looked at each other and said hope we like it and then laughed. The drive up to the resort is less than stellar and not the grand entrance you would expect from a resort of this caliber. Well let me tell you we were pleasantly surprised! The lobby is very beautiful, rich and grand looking (on a small scale). The staff is extremely pleasant and helpful.

They told us the resort was booked and our room was not ready so we could leave our bags and use the property. They would call us once the room was ready. We arrived around 9:30 am and the room was ready around 12:30 pm. We went to breakfast, the beach and then the pool. The room was great. Very clean, nicely decorated and it had a nice view.

Even though the resort was booked you didn't feel as if it was over crowded. The windy pool was full of children but we liked the oval pool better. It was quieter and cleaner.

We did have a small problem with our room and they quickly fixed the issue and gave us a new upgraded room. They were very accommodating without even having to argue.

Spa is wonderful. Small but very nice. Smells great too.

Gift shop is one of a kind with extremely helpful employees and nice selection to browse through.

Tips: 4 restaurants on property. The main dining restaurant has amazing diner with an excellent chef. The cost is very reasonable.
You charge everything to your room which could be dangerous but you can check your bill at anytime.
The beach is very nice. They charge you $25 per day for an umbrella or cabana.

Room Tip: Splurge for the suite. It's worth it.

My family with 3 and 4 year old traveled to the Lago Mar for a 3 day get away. The taxi ride from airport was quick and easy even with two kids. The check in and bell service was quick and easy , we were in our rooms in no time... The staff from front desk to cleaning and maintenance was super friendly. We had a one bedroom suite with 2 twin pullout beds and kitchenette which was more then enough room for the for of us. We had pool view but still had an ocean view from the balcony. The ocean was quick walk and very private and the pools are amazing ... There are plenty if places to eat with the kids from soda shop to grille all casual and kid friendly. They have a great playscape for kids in sand with ping pong , mini golf and shuffleboard. The kids had a blast! And if kids are having fun the parents are having fun. On checkout the concierge arranged a van for us to the airport to only $20 for all 4 of us... It is hard finding a 3 and 4 yr old friendly resort and Lago Mar exceeded our expectations from arrival until checkout..

What a fantastic family friendly resort! Rooms are very spacious and are more like an apartment than a hotel. From the night manager to bellman, service was exceptional and always there to help. If you visit with a family, your kids will have a great time with the resort offering a lagoon pool, regular pool, old fashioned soda shop, ping pong, miniature golf, volleyball, jungle gym, tennis courts, shuffle board, and of course a enormous private beach; you never have to leave the property. The main dining restaurant is phenomenal. Service and food are exceptional, and for the quality you can't beat the price!!!!! If you're looking for a place to stay, that's on the beach in Fort Lauderdale you don't need to look any further than the Lago Mar.
