“Great family trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

We were searching for a getaway near Miami that would be enjoyable for us and our four year-old when a friend recommended Lago Mar. In short, with the exception of a few minor bumps, we were thrilled with the place.

First, the rooms: we had an ocean view one bedroom suite and it was huge. The kitchen was more of a kitchenette with a two-burner stove but the drawer-style fridge and freezer held more than expected. It comes equipped with pots, pans, dishes, and silverware but no real knives or serving/cooking utensils (though I've no doubt they would have drummed some up had we asked). The couch folded out into two separate twin beds with a narrow gap in the middle--brilliant for fussy siblings who don't want to share a bed (you can even fit one of the cushions between them to separate the two). The A/C was inconsistent, however--it didn't seem to reach the bedroom as easily and it was probably 3-4 degrees cooler in the living room where our 4 year-old was sleeping.

The food at the resort was a bargain compared to what you'd find at other resorts, and fantastic (drinks were on par with a pricey resort, so we kept our own stash of juices and rum in the room). While the food was incredible--especially at just $35 for three courses--service at the main restaurant was incredibly slow, to the point where our child had finished his mac and cheese and fallen asleep at the table before our salads even arrived. We asked for our desserts to be wrapped up so we could put our boy to bed and that alone took 25 minutes. It's a shame, because we would have eaten at the restaurant more frequently if we didn't think we'd be faced with such an agonizing wait. Instead, we opted to eat at the bar area where service was speedy (server Stephanie from MA was great!) and the food also quite good (don't miss the salads!). Oh--and the breakfast buffet was also fantastic and a bargain at $16 for adults and $6 for kids. Do note that an 18% tip is included on all meals (the first day we double-tipped on drinks at the bar).

The beach area was spectacular--uncrowded, well groomed. We never had to opt for the $25 chair/umbrella combo since our child either wanted to be in the water or playing in the sand, and instead wrestled with the free blue chairs. One mark off on that front: while the beach service is very aggressive in collecting the chairs at dusk, only one day out of five did they ever offer to help me set up the free chairs, when I was clearly struggling to carry them among our other beach gear and they weren't occupied. I can understand that to a degree--they're there primarily for customers who are paying for chairs-- but what was more annoying was the pushiness in collecting chairs. Signs clearly say that rental chairs are available from 9-5 and that other chairs will be collected an hour before sunset-- which was around 8 PM when we were there. When we arrived at the beach at 4 PM (to avoid the harsh midday sun and heat, esp with a child), the beach attendant warned us that he'd be taking our free blue chairs from us by 5 PM. In June, when the daytime temps are high and with the sun setting so late, it would have been great if they'd been more accommodating to those of us who want to take kids to the beach a bit later in the day--esp. since their actions contradicted stated policy. Perhaps it was because we were there at a slow time--indeed, one evening we tried to order from the beach bar at 8:30 PM and they were already closing up, even though they're supposed to be open until 10 PM. "We haven't seen a customer in an hour and a half," the bartender said, and told us we could still order the full menu from the indoor bar--which was okay, but if we're paying for the full services of the resort shouldn't they be open and available?

Service throughout was mixed like that. We were there to celebrate a big birthday and found a bottle of wine waiting in our room with a note--a very kind and unexpected gesture. Joey the valet was incredibly friendly and a wonderful resource--he really stood out and wanted to do everything possible to make our stay a great one. When he heard that we were going grocery shopping he suggested we drop groceries with the valet and have them brought to our room so we wouldn't have to haul them. Sure enough, we bought too much heavy stuff and swung by the valet station to drop the groceries (our room was on the third floor, far from checkin). Unfortunately, Joey was with another client and the valet who was there looked annoyed and overburdened by the suggestion that he help with the groceries (he did offer to meet us in the parking lot so he could carry them up, but he seemed so annoyed by us that we just parked the car and made multiple trips ourselves).

Overall, the annoyances were minor and the stellar room, pool area, food, beach, play area, etc overshadowed the negatives here. We'd definitely come back and recommend it to others as a great destination for those traveling with young kids. It had everything we needed on the property to keep our boy entertained, without breaking the bank, while still providing a great getaway for the parents.

Room Tip: The ocean facing room was great--worth the money--though ocean view rooms facing the pool also looke...

The Lago Mar is located on the Fort Lauderdale beach strip, yet is in and of itself built on a very private, off the beaten track part of this very popular spot. The hotel is very welcoming, and has an array of rooms including garden view and oceanfront accommodations. We have stayed in the usual rooms as well as the suites. The suites offer anywhere from a partial kitchen to a full kitchen with 1 or 2 bedroom suites and a living room with an open up sofa, along with 2 bathrooms.

The Lago Mar has a fun play area for young kids, (although it can get very hot in the summer) as well as a spot where you can set up your own bbq. It also has a very nice restaurant on the site as well as a more family-fun cafe for quick burgers and snacks.

The hotel is a "cash-free" hotel so basically upon checking in you will give a credit card to be used for everything you will charge during the week, whether drinks at the pool or snacks at the cafe, neccessities at the hotel store or even breakfast, lunch or dinner at the restuarant.

The hotel also has 2 pools, as well as its own private beach, which is a major plus. Because of the private location of this hotel, you would need to drive a very short distance to the beach strip with all of the typical if not "cheesey" tourist gift stores or restaurants. On the weekends there is live music at the pools for all to enjoy.

Room Tip: If you want to save money, I would suggest you get a room with a kitchenette or full sized kitchen...

Stayed at Lago Mar for three nights in early June. The property is absolutely beautiful. It is smaller/more compact than I anticipated based on the pictures posted on-line. However, all areas have lovely landscaping and are kept immaculate. The private beach is pristinely groomed and offers free beach chairs or chaise lounges with umbrella for rent ($25/day)...well worth the price. This resort is also a private club so there are locals that can use the amenities. In spite of this and all of the guests with families, the resort never felt crowded or busy. The décor is very elegant and done in a Tommy Bahamas style with lavish accents throughout the entire property. This is not a modern, swanky high rise hotel like you'll find in the busy "spring break" area of Ft. Lauderdale. This is a classy resort set off the beaten path in a pristine and quiet area of the beach. I wouldn't choose any other location!

A few room tips.....we booked a one bedroom oceanFRONT suite, which is located in the north building (not main building where the lobby/check in area is located) with unobstructed views of the beach/ocean. The first floor rooms have a direct walk out onto the beach. We were on the third floor, so had to walk around the building to access the beach. We would not book this room in the future for a few reasons...the room was long and narrow, with the master bedroom being down the hallway right next to the entrance door, the opposite end from the balcony. Therefore, the master bedroom had zero view and is dark. There is a single vanity en suite bathroom which was small but functional. The shower was a tub/shower surround...not a separate shower stall and tub. There was also a half bath with very narrow stand up shower, which was perfect for our two small daughters. However, I'm not sure that an average size adult could use the shower effectively. The living room with pull-out sofa has the full on view of the ocean. We personally prefer to wake up to the view of the ocean so were disappointed in the room configuration, specifically the location of the master bedroom.

We toured an oceanSIDE room in the main part of the resort and it was lovely...a bit smaller than our room but VERY bright and airy with a large bathroom, jetted tub and stand alone shower with modern marble and granite throughout. The toilet was also in a separate room. The master bedroom had a balcony and full view of the ocean, as did the living room with pull-out sofa. If you choose an Ocean SIDE, the rooms ending in 01 or 02 (201 or 202, 301 or 302) have the best direct straight-on views of the ocean. I would definitely book and Oceanside room when staying here in the future. The oceanfront room was simply not worth the higher price relative to our preferences.

We also toured one of the two penthouse suites. These are located on the 4th and 5th floor of the main resort building. Full wraparound balcony, full direct views of the ocean, two bedrooms, plus very large kitchen and dining area, etc. We were quoted a rate of approximately $500 for the penthouse, which IMO is a great value. We paid over $300 for the oceanfront and it didn't come close to the brightness, space and views from either the Oceanside or penthouse suites.

The other rooms appeared to have views of the pools with ocean in the distance. Due to the beautifully landscaped grounds, I can imagine that all of these "poolside" rooms have lovely views as well.

Most staff were very helpful and friendly. We found the staff in the poolside bar to be rather unfriendly and un-attentive but that was not the norm. David, one of the bellmen was extremely friendly and helpful.

I have a few pictures of the beach and resort grounds if interested. Feel free to email me for pix or with questions.

Room Tip: Choose Ocean SIDE rooms ending in numbers 01 or 02.

We recently stayed in Fort Lauderdale as part of a trip to the Keys as well. We stayed four nights at the Lago Mar, then went to the Keys for four nights, and then returned to the Lago Mar for one night as it is very close to the airport. Both times our check-in went smoothly and quickly. Both times we had "executive suites" on the second floor looking out over the great lagoon pool. Our rooms were very clean and spacious with two big screen TV's and lovely views. The resort itself was very clean with lots to do...we played volleyball and shuffleboard with our two teens (and there was a miniature golf course too, which we did not play). The beach area was superb with a very expansive area to relax in. Our only problem was that Tropical Storm Andrea was forming and it rained a lot during our stay. So one day the beach had riptide warnings out and it was very windy. We managed to keep busy though between storms in the fabulous lagoon pool and just hanging out. I really did enjoy my stay there and another great thing is that the parking was free and readily available. We never had any problems parking very close to our room in the garage. We had a rental car which made it nice to drive the short distance to find all sorts of restaurants. We really enjoyed that the beach area was easily accessible and you didn't have to walk across the very busy 1A1 to get to the beach. If you stay in Fort Lauderdale, this is the place to stay! If we return, I will consider no other properties as it was very well maintained and clean with a great beach and lots to do.

My husband and I were looking for ocean front walk out room and we found it!! The lago Mar had the best beach ever. It is huge and you have your own space to play. They have umbrellas for rent but they are not close to the water. We tried to use a baby tent for shade for our baby and were told it was not allowed due to safety. They just want you to pay to rent their stuff. That was the only thing that pissed me off during my trip. We traveled there for 8 days 7 nights. We had a first floor walk out ocean room that was great. Our room was VERY clean and the bed was like home. The maid staff was GREAT!! They provided us a high chair with a tray for our room and a porta crib. We also had a kitchen in our room but didnt know until we got there the kitchen has no freezer. There is a microwave/convection oven and a two burner glass cook top. You get 4 small pans and the basic dishes. It made cooking hard so we ended up eating out more then we thought we would. There is grocery store and dollar tree close by. The fridge space is like two built in wine fridges under the counter. There was also a coffee pot and the provide the coffee. Not what I was expecting when I think of kitchen. You need a car to get around. The entire hotel is very clean and 100's of kids. No joke, your kids will have playmates no matter what age. I saw groups of teens, tweens, and young ones playing everywhere. The pool was nice but we used the lazy river. There are NO life guards for their beach or pools. Swim at your own risk. I wasn't too happy about that. There is put put, chess, shuffle board, tennis and a playground. I was shocked to see there was no kids programs of any type. Not even movie on the beach. By 10pm the hotel was dead. There is no Disney channel and no DVD player :-( That also made it hard for us with a little one. They did have HBO and cartoon network but that's not shows for little kids on there. The master bedroom was huge and we had two bathrooms. The sofa was a sofa bed that turned into two twin beds that didnt touch. Perfect for siblings who wouldn't want to share a bed. Our alarm clock had a great sound machine feature on it that was great for the baby. They have pay per view movies that I think are all $17.99!!! We did eat the breakfast buffet once there it was good but expensive. We didnt eat there since we had so many day trips like Miami zoo, deep sea fishing trip and the sea aquarium. Overall it is a nice place if beach time for your family is what you want. We will be back :-)

4 star, fine, definitely not a 5 star. The property definitely seemed smaller than the pictures that make it appear vast. Still very nice. 2 nice pools and a HUGE beach. Sure you have to pay for nice chairs, but cheapos available free. Shuffleboard and putt putt was fun. the putt put did need more attention, but it was free. Pool and grounds were very clean. plenty of chairs, was never a problem poolside. Nobody played volleyball the whole time we were there, but 2 nice courts.

I love that it had free wifi IN THE ROOMS and free parking. The wifi worked great. Parking garage was very tight, just be careful parking to not hit support poles. Our room was clean and very large. Bathroom was small, but useable. The only real knock on the room was the poor comforter that was all bunched up on one end and wouldn't stay on the bed. otherwise, no problem. forgot, the bathroom fan was almost seized up, ready to die. didn't care. nice sized fridge in the room was empty and useable, not a mini bar. k cup coffee machine and a good sized safe.

Spa was typically priced.... we went off site and paid less than half the price. massage envy was great, professional, and cheap. few miles away.

Didn't eat on site, right across the bridge were a lot of options, loved bravo and Bimini.

Drinks were pricey, but didn't see anyone given flack for having their own cups poolside, so.... I also loved the fact that you could head down to the pool late and take a dip. never once we we given a problem, of course we were quiet. Some nights a few kids were out and not as courteous, but...

overall we enjoyed the hotel and would go back. happy for the upgraded room and we checked in right away around noon. nice front counter staff.

Room Tip: we reserved a standard balcony room and we were given a very large room with partial ocean view ove...
