I found the Embassy Suites to be above average and enjoyable during my stay. The high-rise hotel with interior room entrances is located in a low-rise commercial/business area and was easy to access from major roads. Upon landing, I called the hotel to find out if they had a shuttle van and was told they had a hotel shuttle for $7/person, but that a driver wasn’t available at the moment which was odd and disappointing. Ground transportation would be a problem on the return trip as well (see below). A cab ride from the Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale Airport was $11.70 and took about 15 minutes. The area appeared to be generally safe and I had no concerns walking around after dark. The hotel has numerous restaurants (Outback Steak House, Firehouse Subs, Moe’s Southwest Grill, another steakhouse, etc.), a Publix supermarket, and convenience stores within easy walking distance; there is also a restaurant and bar inside the hotel. Check-in at the front desk was quick and the front desk staff polite and helpful. The room was spotless upon entering. The hotel did have wireless internet access for $9.95/day; the internet connection was fast and reliable. Available electrical outlets to plug in laptops, battery chargers, etc. were plentiful and conveniently located. The room contained a coffee pot, two flat screen TVs, iron, ironing board, and extra blankets. My suite included a sitting/TV/work room and a separate bedroom which could be closed off with a solid wood door. The décor was modern and tasteful. The bed was too soft for my taste though the bedding was very nice. Oddly, the only item in poor condition in the room was the ironing board which was quite literally falling apart. One safety concern is that all the rooms appear to have an open air balcony; I was concerned from a child safety aspect (though the railings were very robust with narrow openings) and a personal safety aspect – some balconies are physically joined with only a railing height wall separating the two balconies which would require no effort to climb over. In such a room I would ensure my sliding door was securely locked, I did. I found the “bloom” brand bathroom products to work well. Public bus transit is available near the hotel. I did not have significant problems with noise from inside the room, neighboring rooms, or outside the hotel. The noise of the atrium waterfall and loud discussions in the atrium (particularly during happy hour) was noticeable though not annoying in the sitting area, some wind noise and aircraft roar was heard in the bedroom, though the more distracting atrium noises could be dramatically reduced by shutting the bedroom door. An internet kiosk is available in the lobby for checking-in for flights (with printer), I did not notice a full service business center though I didn’t look for it either. A well equipped and maintained gym is located on the 12th floor. The meeting rooms were bright and open, located right off the main atrium with restrooms nearby. An expansive buffet breakfast is included in the room rate and included eggs, sausage, pancakes, French toast, and grits – as good as a Shoney’s or IHOP style restaurant. Nearby attractions include the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center and Cruise Terminal. Both are within walking distance, though I wouldn’t want to carry any heavy items. The beach is several blocks further and is walkable, though a long walk. My cabdriver said that it was about $7 for a cab ride to the beach from the hotel and I think it would be worth it to get dropped off where you like. Other properties nearby include a Hyatt Place. Trying to return to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport was convoluted as well. In the morning I asked the front desk about the shuttle and was again told that a shuttle ran on the hour and half hour “for $8 I think”. Then when I was leaving I asked the bellman where the shuttle was; instead of pointing toward an Embassy Suites marked shuttle van, he called over a black SUV. After reading a very helpful previous post about unlicensed limos serving this hotel, I asked to see the SUV’s taxi/limo license and their business license before I loaded my bag or entered the SUV. The driver showed me the Broward County permit and their FLL airport decal affixed to the windshield and thanked me for asking, as he explained, they don’t like nor want unlicensed taxis taking their business and he confirmed that there is a problem with taxis at the airport which don’t have Broward County permits or FLL airport permits as required by local ordnance. The quoted and actual cost for the SUV ride was $12 and I didn't have any problems with the driver or service. I have stayed at this property twice and would definitely stay at this property again.
