I visited this hotel after a week’s stay at The National in Miami Beach. I booked this hotel based upon the reviews within this web site. The hotel is very new and the most impressive 'Best Western' hotel that I have ever seen.
My room was on the 6th floor. Initially I was allocated a room that over-looked the road at the rear of the hotel. After requesting an upgrade ($25 extra per day) I was moved to a suite which overlooked the ocean. The suite included a very spacious bedroom, bathroom and sitting room area with a balcony. The room was spotless and cleaned every day. It also included 2 TVs, 2 double beds, a radio, fridge and microwave. The choice of decor was not as trendy as the contemporary style you will find within Miami as the hotel was designed to be a typical Floridian themed accommodation. The food at the hotel was of a very high standard and I ate there every day. Unfortunately, the choice was very limited and the menu never changed. The hotel also included a lovely ice cream parlour where you could buy ice cream, newspapers, magazines, crisps and sweets. Next to the reception was also an area that provided FREE internet access. This was really good and I used it daily.
The pool area was very clean. As the pool is right on the beach it is very windy which means that you cannot sit underneath an umbrella without it blowing away! Due to this there was very little shade for hot days and young children. The pool itself comprised of a normal sized pool (not very deep) and also a lazy river. The kids loved the lazy river as the hotel provided inflatable rings to play with. The pool area was also supervised with two full time lifeguards. Towels were also provided free of charge.
The hotel is literally right on the beach which means no long walk if you want to sit near the ocean. Again beds and towels are provided by the hotel.
My only concerns about the hotel are:
1. Location - this hotel was based within a very residential area of Fort Lauderdale. Each day I needed a car, taxi or bus ride to eat out or shop. This is because the majority of restaurants are either within Las Olas, The Galleria or the Beach Front. I felt very out of the way!
2. Staff Attitude - The majority of staff within the hotel were lovely and provided first class customer service. However one member of staff on reception was very unfriendly and did not provide very good customer service when I needed assistance with local information and extending my check out time. I felt she really let down the reputation of hotel.
Although I had a very pleasant stay at Fort Lauderdale I do not think I would stop at the Pelican Beach again due to its location. Whilst out and about I noticed that the W Hotel chain are building a new hotel nearer to the centre. I also visited the Atlantic Hotel, which was more centrally located and very impressive.
I would recommend this hotel to guests who have children or who do mind being away from the centre of Fort Lauderdale.
