The cab driver said to me as he was taking me from Pelican Beach to the airport “How did you like your hotel?” I replied “Not that much to be honest” He said, “Nearly all the guests I take away from this hotel are unhappy”.
Interesting. I wish they would have posted on this site, so I would have stayed elsewhere.
I requested a room on a high up floor. I was given the second floor. This hotel was practically empty because it was the off season according to their bellman. I still got a lousy room on a low floor.
Unfortunately I stayed in the SunTower. Here you are the unloved stepchild. I emailed the hotel before I booked & asked if the SunTower was the place to stay & never got back an answer. I knew the SunTower had ocean views & that is what I wanted. I think I made a big mistake.
The Lobby of the Main Hotel:
The lobby is just fine (although their beautiful lobby flowers are all artificial).
The area was smaller than I thought it would be.
The Bar has about 6 or 7 tables & it very small.
The Restaurant:
They have one smallish restaurant.
For breakfast they have a buffet. I asked if I could order something ala carte for breakfast. They said yes. I asked for two sausages. I was charged $2.00 per sausage. The service was the worst service I have ever had. I never got a cup of coffee until I walked up to a bus person & asked for a cup. I never saw the waitress. Never. I had to ask the bus person to find my check. If you like good coffee, you will no find it here. No lattes. Bring your own coffee for the room. Their coffee is old & tastes burnt.
The restaurant was unexciting in my opinion and caters to people with small children. Things on the menu included a few salads and sandwiches and things like chicken fingers and hamburgers. Nothing that was eye-popping.
The frustrating thing is that if you don’t have a car, there is really no place else in the area to eat. They have a captive audience.
Check-in:
Check-in was odd because when the clerk found out I was staying in the SunTower the first thing he did was threatened me with a $250. 00 fine if I am caught smoking anywhere on the premises...including outside. Then he made me sign & initial a document to that effect. Welcome.
The Staff:
I liked the bellman. The front desk staff on all shifts were very rude to me. The waitstaff was way below average. I never got a smile or a good morning. Not once.
The Bathroom:
The extras included a bar of soap. Nothing else.
The toilet was gross it looked like it had urine in it. It didn’t, the toilet bowel was just old and icky.
The Room:
Old. Depressing. I almost cried. It felt dirty & neglected & very threadbare. I never felt clean at this hotel. My sheets and blankets were torn.
No hotel information. None. No pool hours. No room service list. No area activities. No listing of TV stations. No long distance calling information.
The room had an air-conditioning unit that was taped together with electric tape. If I stood in front of the AC unit, I felt some coolness, but my room was so hot all the time. When I asked the front desk about it, their solution was to close the curtains, (which defeats the purpose of the beach view). Even with closed curtains, it was very hot & humid. I was so uncomfortable in the room because of the heat.
Parts of my ceiling were peeling.
The Balcony:
The balcony door was broken my first night.
Ahhh the balcony. Very tiny. Two people could not comfortably sit on the balcony & face the ocean. It had a constant rusty drip all the time, from the roof above me.
The balcony glass windows were so dirty and grimy, looks like they had never been cleaned.
The patio plastic furniture is not wiped down, it was covered in filth.
Bugs everywhere on the balcony.
I overlooked the roof that was pure rust.
Nice ocean view however.
The SunTower Building (Annex):
Garbage cans were placed all around the SunTower to catch the leakage from air conditioners. The elevator is old and stinks. The stairs were really gross. Peeling paint everywhere in the stairwell. I found several large trash bags in the walkways that were just sitting out (again, in that heat, it really smelled bad).
It has a pool, but with no view & old dirty plastic pool furniture, not the nice new clean furniture like the new building gets.
If you stay in the SunTower, you notice that in front of your building are old plastic lounge beach chairs that are dirty. However the people in the main building have pretty blue and white stripped lounge chairs. Yes you can use them, but there is a definite message that your lounge chairs are dilapidated (just like the building).
The Rip Off:
I found the biggest rip off was the phone calls. They charged $7.52 for a one-minute phone call to Denver. When I complained to the front desk, they did not fix these charges. There is no information in the room indicating these prices.
The Beach:
It is narrow and was littered with beer bottles and some trash when I was there. The ocean water was very warm. You must check out the towels (again sign & initial) yet there is no way to prove you returned the towels. The towels are very thin.
At 4:30 pm the staff person on the beach told me I couldn’t use the beach chairs because he was ready to lock them up. He told me I needed to move to the north side of the beach. People were literally swimming until past 9 pm because it was so darn hot.
The Pool (new building):
The first day of my three-day vacation it was closed. The pool is small & fairly shallow. The lazy river is fine for two and three year olds; not something a teen or adult would want to do, in my opinion.
The Workout Room:
On the 10th floor they have a workout room. It is very small. Only one person at a time could walk through it. It has a skinny aisle with equipment on either side. But it is just too small.
The Location:
There is nothing around (within walking distance) to do. I found a really old hotel bar two doors down called Irelands. But other than that …nothing.
Concierge:
They had a concierge desk, but I never saw a concierge there.
Ice Cream Parlor:
They have an ice cream parlor that also sells items such as wine, sunscreen, snacks and postcards.
The Main Hotel:
The rooms in the main hotel are very nice and large. I think they are fine if you have kids. I think there are some nice things about the hotel for families with money. I think as long as you stay in the new building with an ocean view you should be fine.
I did like their porch (again in the main new building), it has a nice view of the ocean. It would have been nice if they had servers to get you wine or coffee or a snack. I never saw a server.
