We (a couple with a 7 year old daughter) loved our time at the Pelican Grand. We had (for a ridiculously cheap price, during a sale on Expedia) an oceanfront suite on the corner, looking both out to the ocean and down towards central Ft Lauderdale. The room was very nice and spacious, and we enjoyed the balcony overlooking the ocean. The hotel seemed to be in very good shape, and the overall building, with a sort of island colonial look about it, was very nice; the breezeway in back was very nice for relaxing in the shade when we'd had enough of the sun.
The location was perfectly convenient for us. We see a car as a necessity in Miami and Ft Lauderdale (as much as we normally like walkable, urban places), so given that, the location is great.
One downside is that the pool area is quite small, the pool itself is small, and it is absurdly warm, like beyond bathtub warm. Our daughter liked it, though. The lazy river is great for kids, as long as parents are in control (there were no real problems while we were there). Overall, I can imagine this area getting way too crowded in high season.
However, that is easily fixed: go to the beach! The beach is clean and wonderful, so that is where we spent most of our outdoor time. We enjoyed walking a long ways north along the beach, and my wife also went running along the beachfront promenade in the mornings.
We did not have any service issues (some people freak out if it's half an hour before the pool closes, and the towel person isn't there, so if you have to get a towel from the front desk; for us, that is not a service issue) other than once in the restaurant for breakfast - one morning, they had a complete breakdown (probably related to an event that was being catered), and it took an hour and a half to get our eggs and pancakes. However, that appeared to be an isolated event, as the rest of our time there was trouble-free.
This is easily the most enjoyable (other than the pool) hotel we've stayed at in Miami and Ft Lauderdale, and we would certainly stay there again.
