3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

The hotel is located in a great spot just past a very busy strip on the same side of the road as the ocean. Most hotels are across the street and you must walk across a bustling road to get to the beach. The Pelican did not maintain the beach area in front of the hotel as it should be kept, free of debri cleaned at least at the end of each day. It is not that big of a beach or a chore to do. The hotel is a nice old building with decent size rooms and nice bathrooms. The food at the hotel was just ok and expensive and staff was not very helpful to find some nice food alternatives. The hotel has a small lobby and you have to walk through it to get back to your room while wearing a bathing suit. It was especially awkward when we started to walk through and a wedding was taking place in the lobby so we just went back outside until it was over. All and all, not bad but, I would not repeat my visit.

Room Tip: beach front does provide a beautiful view since the hotel is only steps from the ocean.

Dear lands1,

Please accept my apologies for less than a perfect stay. I am a little confused about your comment about not having access to your room during a wedding in the lobby. There are always accessible paths but you are correct that most people do access the pool and beach through the breeze way by the Emporium or through the lobby and the bar but even during the occasional bad weather wedding ceremony in the lobby there are always paths left open for our guests. I also assume that when you refer to the debris on the beach you are commenting on the areas left exposed by the old seawall and the beach stairs that were ripped apart by the extreme high tides in November as our beach staff clears the trash left by guests several times a day. This heavy debris is in the hands of EPA and the Army Corp of Engineering as we wait on permits to clear this area on the beach.
It is disappointing to read your comments on the food at Ocean2000 as we have received a number of positive comments on the quality and pricing.
As we are constantly working to improve our service and product I want to thank you for your comments and feedback. You can rest assured that we take all of these comments seriously in our efforts of continuous improvements.
I do hope the you will decide to return and experience the changes that are taking place at the hotel.

Sincerely,
Bob Keesler

. What was supposed to be a fun filled and relaxing trip for our anniversary, was less that relaxing and lacking at times. Let start with the valet parking, the general manager will say that $28.00 a day is reasonable for parking given the location, well being that there isn't much around the property, I’m not too sure what he's basing this off of. To spend 3 nights at a hotel and then have to pay almost the equivalent of another nights stay for parking is ridiculous, not to mention every time they bring you your car, they have their hand out for a tip. (Here’s an idea, take the money you’re ripping guests off for valet and pay them more) Okay, moving on. The front desk staff was great, no complaints. Very personable and knowledgeable, had some great suggestions for what to do and where to go, but then came the words I was not prepared for at a Deluxe BEACH FRONT resort… The access to the beach is closed, you need to go down the street and use the public access! So private beach just became just a beach view, but moving on. We got our keys and proceeded to our room the room was great, bed was comfortable and the view amazing (King Ocean View). {Note: don’t drink the Evian} Problems with the room, one of the windows had a crack about 3 feet long, the door to the patio and the railing were both heavily rusted, but those are minor cosmetics that “need fixing”. I understand that there were some natural difficulties resulting in beach erosion, however to continue to charge inflated prices and billing yourself as a beach front property with a private beach, when the beach is 500 feet long, but less than 10 feet wide is a bit dishonest, “don’t you think?” Okay Food, avoid the restaurant, overpriced is the understatement of the century, quantity is lacking, the kitchen staff needs to be introduced to a little something called spices. The Ice Cream Parlor is nice and quaint, but $6.00 for a small milkshake that is more milk than shake is a bit much. Recreation: The pool and lazy river are great, the lazy river is not as large as it looks in pictures, neither is the pool (creative camera work), but still nice. The way they set up your lounge chair with towels is a welcome service that was not expected. Overall from a service standpoint, it is almost top notch. From an amenity standpoint, it’s lacking a bit. The Pelican Grand Beach Resort needs to drop the Grand from their name and until such time as they have direct access to the beach, maybe just be the Pelican Resort. Overall a B-

{Note: There is nothing within walking distance, when the valet says it’s just down the street, what he is saying is about 2 miles}

Room Tip: Try to secure a corner ocean view on the 4th floor or higher.

Dear Tommy K,

It is very disappointing to read your review. Please accept my apologies for what was a very lack luster visit to the hotel. Our goal is to exceed our guest’s expectations and clearly in this instance we did not live up the standards we set for ourselves or the standards that you were expecting.
As for the valet charges being reasonable our garage is a tandem lift system allowing us to park four cars into one space. As for the charges for valet being reasonable this is based on the comparison to all the other major hotels on the beach that also have valet parking only.
You correct on the beach. While I am not sure of the dates of your stay we have provided beach access at the north end of the pool where our beach attendants are stationed. The damage on the beach was a combination of hurricane sandy followed by extreme high tides the last two weeks of November. This has affected all of Ft. Lauderdale beach and I can assure you we are working with our insurance carrier, the Department of Environmental Protection Agency and the City of Ft. Lauderdale and Coastal Systems International, our engineering firm, to restore the beach and the main boardwalk as quickly as possible. I do apologize for the inconvenience that this caused. However, as you can see these are not just simple repairs that can be done overnight.
As for the food in our restaurant it is priced in line again with other hotels. Again please accept my apologies and the perception you have of our lack of value for the money you spent.
As we are in the process of updating our rooms, painting the outside of the building I do hope that you will give us a try again.
I also invite you personally to call me directly if you would like to discuss your stay in more specific terms.

Sincerely,
Bob Keesler

If you want to have a pleasant beach experience do not go here. The hotel is smoke free but people are allowed to smoke on the beach...and it is like sitting in an ashtray. Choke. The beds are uncomfortable ...hard foam mattresses. All this for very high prices... what a terrible disappointment.

Dear cohenprof,

Please accept our apology for your experience on the beach with smoking. While the hotel property is non-smoking all Florida beaches are public and unfortunately we have no control over this area. I am surprised to read your comments on the bedding as we get many compliments on our mattresses and quality of sleep in the rooms. I did notice that you were not happy with your stay here in 2006 and again apologize.
As we are now in the process of updating our rooms and re-launching our new restaurant Ocean2000 I do hope that you will give us another try in the future.

Sincerely,

I had the worst brunch I have ever experienced. For $65. they had one small bowl with a few shrimp, less stone crabs and about ten oysters at the foot of the one and only hot food station consisting of one choice of dried out vegtables, one choice of pasta wih little or no sauce (I took one bite and decided to pass on it as it tasted like it had been sitting there overnight and was really dried out) a salmon resting in oil and celery and finally at the end of this one station a baked ham and some kind of meat i couldn't reconize..
The server picked up the bottle of wine we orderded and poured it all over the table completely missing the glass (don't be fooled no mimosas or bloody marys included). and walked away leaving a mess.
MY ADVICE RUN !!!!!!! WHEN WE COMPLAINED ALL THEY COULD SAY WAS "WE'VE HEARD COMPLAINTS ALL DAY"

We had one day post our cruise at this hotel and it was just what we were looking for. We had 3 kids with us and the room had 2 queen and a separate area with a pull out bed so it accomodated all of us perfectly and it had a beautiful patio/balcony to boot. The hotel is beautiful and there is a verandah to sit and look out to the ocean and a beach to walk or for the kids to play in. They have a nice pool as well and restaurant on site. Food is a bit pricey at the hotel but you can order from the bar area and sit on the verandah...just beautiful. Free wifi and a free business center is a nice touch. They also have a gift shop on site which is nice. We ate at a fabulous cuban restaurant which is about a mile away called Las Vegas Cuban..highly recommend it. We used C & G shuttle service and they were great..the hotel arranged it for us but you can also contact them directly. Overall a wonderful stay and we would definitely come back!

We often cruise out of Ft.Lauderdale and spend the day before in port. This time found the Pelican Grand which is oceanfront. Had a lovely 2 room suite overlooking the water. The veranda /restaurants are very nice and comfortable. Food was good if somewhat pricey and the service friendly. The pool was sunlit in the afternoon and warm enough to swim (day after Thanksgiving). There is a problem with some beach erosion but people were swimming at low tide. We plan to go back in the spring when the rates are lower. Just out of the main part of town but convenient if you have a car or want to walk the few blocks to the water taxi.It was $25 taxi ride from the airport which is not bad for FT.L. After the cruise we went back and checked our bags and hung out until it was time to fly home. Better than hours at the airport.

Room Tip: All rooms face the water as does the veranda. Try to get a higher up room although not noisy while...
