We spent 4 nights at the Pelican Grand Hotel in November 2007. It is an extremely attractive hotel, a cut above the typical cookie cutter beach hotels. The lobby and other common areas have a nice tropical resort feel, and the hotel has a terrific covered porch facing the ocean loaded with rocking chairs and outdoor dining for the restaurant. One of the nicest features was the close proximity of the ocean, only about 100 feet from the porch or your balcony. The drawback to closeness of the ocean is that the beach is fairly narrow where the hotel is located. Personally, I'd rather have the ocean close and had no problem with the narrow beach. While the hotel was not crowded, there was plenty of room on the beach for those who wanted to sit there. The hotel has four computers in the business center and free internet access. The rooms vary in view and bed size. Get the ocean front suite. It is well worth the additional cost. The suite has a wall of glass french doors between the living area overlooking the beach and the sleeping area. The fact that the wall between the two is glass makes the sleeping area bright and the separation works well for providing a living area separate from the sleeping area. The rooms are very large, nicely decorated and very clean and comfortable. The suites have two TV and a mini fridge. The bed was very comfortable . The pool and lazy river are not extensive, but are perfectly fine for the size of the resort. The lazy river is a very token effort, don't be expecting King's Dominion. It's fine for adults and children, but teens will probably be disappointed. My only complaint about the pool is that it is in the shade of the hotel at different times of the day, and if you want sun, you may need to move during the day. The staff was extremely friendly and the location is close to everything, yet not in the heart of all of the beach touristy area. If you are looking for a beach front hotel this is a great place. Many of the hotels in Fort Lauderdale are across the road from the beach and far from the water. If you are considering other hotels make sure they are actually on the beach. We stayed at the Marriott a year ago and found the Pelican Grand much nicer and more personal. We ate at the restaurant and the pool for lunch and the food was just average. The nice thing about the restaurant is dining on the covered porch overlooking the ocean. This is a very attractive and comfortable hotel with a very friendly staff. The beach front location can't be beat in Fort Lauderdale. All in all, a great place to stay.
