We are a couple in our late 20's who decided to stay at the Sun Tower for 4 days in April, 2007. We paid $506 US for 4 nights at the Sun Tower including a 4 day rental car. I would say the stay was great mainly because by staying in the Sun Tower you pay a cheaper price because the building is older , but you get to use all the amenities of the Pelican Grand Beach Resort right next door. It's as if you are staying next door, you just don't get the higher quality room. The Pelican Grand is a new beautiful hotel with a great pool and Lazy river, along with ice cream parlour and beachside restaurants. You get to use everything the other people paying twice as much as you are getting.
Rooms: The Sun Tower is definitely older and the rooms show it. The good part is that the rooms are very large, every single room has a oceanfront balcony - which I must say was amazing to wake up to, and they have a decent size fridge and microwave, and TV with HBO. The part some people might consider bad would be the closet door wouldn't open and close easily, and the toilet handle needed to be giggled after flushing to stop from running. These things were minor and did not affect the enjoyment of our stay at all. The bed was clean and comfy, and had fresh sheets and towels each day.
Amenities: The sun tower itself has its own pool which can be useful when the Pelican Grand's pool is overun with screaming children. You have full access to all amenities at the Pelican Grand which include Beach lounge chairs, beach towel service, a lazy river with tubes, pool, ice cream/snack shop, bar, boardgames area/room, restaurant ( I had the Grouper which was delicious), free internet/office room, and servers which will bring you food and drinks by the pool. Valet parking.
Location: I don't know Fort Lauderdale all that well, but we had a car and this was so close to Drive to the Galleria Mall on Sunrise Blvd and was a less then 5 min drive to Las Olas and Bahia mar where the boat tours leave from. The hotel is directly on the beach - I mean it was probably built half in the sand, so that is perfect.
Parking: The pelican grand has valet parking only which is $12 per day, unlimited coming in and out. The only other option for parking is a few metered spots right out front which are free from 6pm-8am and are $1 per hour from 8am - 6pm, but only take quaters. We arrived at night so we decided to park for free at the meter overnight and at 8am the next day took the car to the valet, so we didn't have to pay for an extra day of parking.
Other: The only other comments are that this seemed like a definite family destination and as a young couple I found myself annoyed by all the children spashing and screaming in the pool/lazy river. But I would still stay here again for the fantastic value.
