This property is a typical old Florida 1950s Mom and Pop motel. The Sable Resort owns 4 adjacent properties (Shell, Martindale, Sandy Shores, and Seaside).
We were looking for a place close to the beach with a pool and kitchen and the Sandy Shore met those criteria however it was a mixed bag.
Positives:
Location: about 100 yards to the beach, a block from Starbucks, and a short walk to many restaurants and beach shops (to buy towels for pool) and a CVS drug store that had a large grocery section and beach items. It would be easy to stay here without a car.
Staff: the staff was friendly, helpful, and hard working. The office person was alone and had a lot of running around to check on things.
Price for location: the motel is surrounded by high-end hotels (W, Hilton, etc.) so I’m sure their rates were much better than those nearby.
Pool: small (only served 10 rooms) but it was never crowded, it was warm and cleaned every morning. Pool area was one of the nicest parts of this motel.
Size: it was nice to walk out of our room and use the tables and chairs near the pool.
Beach chairs: free ones available to use at the Shell
Clientele: many international guests.
Coffee makers and safes in each room but no toiletries or hair dryers.
Negatives:
Room condition: we had 2 rooms and one was in better shape than the other though they both looked as if property owners had given up on maintenance (either biding time to sell the property once the Florida real estate market improves or figuring that next year’s Spring Break college students will damage something anyway). For example, the closets didn’t have doors and at one point the 1950s bathroom tile had been painted and now the paint was peeling off the tiles, the rod to open our blinds had been broken off, the oven didn't work, all of the rails on the inside of the refrigerator door had been broken off, and the decorative knobs on our end table had been broken off.
Kitchen equipment: while the website says that the kitchen is fully equipped, our kitchen had 1 cereal bowl and 1 wine glass but 8 plates and 4 cups. It seems that there should be as many bowls, plates, cups, and glasses (and flatware) for the number of people that are the capacity of the room.
Cleanliness: it was generally clean though even on days that the tile floor was mopped (it wasn’t every day) it still was not clean (as evidenced by the black on the bottom of our feet and on the crawling baby in our group). These floors need a deep cleaning. Also, the room with 4 adults did not regularly get 4 towels or an extra roll of toilet paper.
No heat: each room had an air conditioning unit but no heat. On the night that it got really cold the office did hand out space heaters but they didn’t haven enough for every bed room so one party in our group spent a very cold night.
Wifi: was free but only worked outside on the pool deck near the laundry room which made it inconvenient for those of us who needed to work. It was particularly inconvenient in bad weather. Fortunately, Starbucks had wifi.
Coin-operated washer and dryer: was $1.25 per load for washer and for dryer but they were out of order.
Noise: the street noise varied a lot from night to night but because we were on the ground level and the windows are old any street noise sounds like it is in your bedroom.
Room Tip: Room 3306 was nicer than 3308
