We are two teachers from Calgary who took the opportunity to head south for our long awaited March Break escape from the frozen north. Not being terribly familiar with the Ft. Lauderdale area we used Trip Advisor to help us decide where to stay as budget and value was of the utmost importance. After considerable time spent visiting motel web sites and making phone calls we decided on Vistamar in Ft. Lauderdale. Another positive for us is they do not take March Break students.
We arrived at dusk after a long flight and despite the late hour, were delighted when we stepped onto the property. We started to relax the instant we walked through the front arches. The tropical atmosphere and Caribbean music playing in the background lit by subtle rope lighting around the balconies and trees created a very pleasant effect. John met us with a smile, and in view of our late arrival, gave us our keys, took us to our suite and said we could register in the morning. I think he was tired as well and would rather deal with us in the morning.
The grounds are well kept for the most part and offer several spots to relax either under the central gazebo or several other spots with patio furniture and umbrellas. Our rooms were very clean, fresh towels and toiletries were supplied every day and the trash was removed for us daily by an upbeat and smiling Mary. We later learned that no outside help is employed and that all the room servicing is done solely by Mary and John. This also made us feel secure knowing that no one else entered the rooms beside John & Mary as we both travel with our computers, our lifelines to the outside world (high speed internet is free). John patiently answered our questions regarding activities and locations of nearby attractions. The main strip is a short walk and offers a variety of dining choices, clubs, and shopping.
There is a lot of development on the main beach road (A1A) and apparently a lot of restaurants and smaller hotels have disappeared in favour of a more upscale variety of very expensive hotels and condominium projects. However, within a half mile of Vistamar Street we found plenty of good restaurants including one which became a favourite, Thai on the Beach on 9th Street and we also enjoyed the great pizza delivered by Jet Pizza. However we found that the short walk to the beach was all we were mainly interested in. The beach is a 3-minute walk away, was clean, and we were pleased that Vistamar Street and A1A was a main intersection with a stop light and a life guard station.
Upon waking the first day we were looking forward to seeing/feeding the Bonnet House monkeys but they were not ready to show themselves. We saw them a few mornings later and fed them some raw peanuts and took some photographs of them. As John would tell us, they don’t wear watches so you can’t tell when they’re going to show up. However, early mornings between 6 and 9:30 am seemed to be the best times to catch them.
The pool showed its age a little but was clean, bright and blue, and above all was heated to a minimum of 86 Fahrenheit. There was also some landscaping under way around the pool area. While we were relaxing, it seemed that John and Mary, particularly Mary, were always in motion attending to something or other.
The motel caters well for those looking for a relaxing vacation and does not differ much from the photos on their website. All in all, our vacation was a success and we managed to unwind among the palms of the Vistamar and Fort Lauderdale. In terms of bang for the buck we were not disappointed in the least. The one bedroom suites really are spacious and made us feel as though we were at home in a small apartment. The only small negatives were the older fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen. Everything worked, however, and it was in keeping with the overall feel of the place. It sure beat paying $800 per night for a single room at a luxury hotel a couple of blocks away.
We are looking for somewhere ‘south’ for our upcoming wedding and discussed our plans with John who was more than accommodating and has stayed in touch and forwarded the relevant information to us.
Thanks John and Mary for a great stay!
