The Elbo Room was established in 1938 and has been a Ft. Lauderdale landmark for almost 70 years (2008). The only thing separating the bar and the beach/Atlantic Ocean is A1A.
With it's open inviting design (some of the walls open like garage doors) and desirable location, there is no wonder why this old bar has been so popular.
It got it's start with the WW2 sailors in the 1940's, then the Spring Break crowd from the fifties to the late eighties. Elbo Room was definitely launched by the filming of the movie "Where the Boys Are ", with Connie Frances and George Hamilton.
From about 1985 (peak time of Spring Breaker crowd) to the present time with anyone still wanting to relive the good old days to the latest generation wanting a place to party keep it alive.
And it can still throw down with the best during Spring Break, just drive past on a Friday night during Spring Break, you'll see.
Music was a mix of old classic rock and modern hits when I visited.
Beers were about $2.
There's a rumor of land development going around, so if you want to check out the Elbo Room, do it now while you can, it might be a condo someday.
