“Sea Sick”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

On the way over we were told to be there very early for our 9 am departure time. We waited for several hours in a room that resembled a warehouse. The check in crew were very grumpy and not friendly at all. When we finally got on board and took off we had no idea what we were in for. Within an hour of leaving the port 4 out of 6 in our party were repeatedly vomiting as was at least half of the passengers on the ferry. The staff were very helpful in handing out vomit bags the entire 3 hour journey. On the return we were much more prepared. We all took Dramamine and none of us got sick even though the ride was just as rough if not rougher than the ride over. I just thought if the ferry is routinely that rough that somewhere on the website or in the passenger literature they might warn you and tell you to prepare. It was awful to have your friends vomiting for 2 hours straight. The ferry was not cheap either. Two first class adults (without luggage fees) cost $450 round trip. Also there is very little selection of food available for purchase on board the boat. Mainly just snack and drinks are available and there is only one cashier to service the whole boat. I will not be taking this ferry again!

“Not a bad boat but !!!seasickness warning!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

The crew, etc, were not bad. However, when we went across the waves were high-- 12+ feet. Be aware that in these conditions this is not really a viable trip for anyone without sea legs. Frankly, the captain should have turned back, simply announcing it was too rough to go on.

During our trip, 75% or more of the passengers vomited-- over and over again. My two children vomited until they fell asleep, and my wife filled four bags. I have never had motion sickness in my life, and I felt queasy after an hour of rolling, rolling, rolling.

I have read online that the particular ship used for the ferry is particularly susceptible to rough seas. So if you are planning to take this ferry, watch the wave forecasts intently. Anything over 5 feet is probably a no-no.

Upon arrival there were some snafus at port, and going through customs was slow, but that was not the fault of Balearia.

“Don't even remember”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

This was the worst experience i have had. I am never going on a boat again in my life this was so bad. I don't even remember this because i was throwing up for the entire 3 hour period and filled up 3 bags full of vomit. All i can remember was my face into a bag. This boat was slow and extremely disorganized,

“Poor ferry- waste of time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

The ferry company is part of a large Spanish ferry company operating ferries in the Canary Islands and the Balearics in the Mediteranean, so they should know what they are doing. Sadly their experience hasnt travelled across the Atlantic.

This ship is old tired and worn out. It being a fast catamaran design, it doesn't have stabilisers and would pound hard and roll into a rough sea. First class seats help recline and rest. Recommended .

Organisation is seriously bad. The website doesn't work properly and some information on pricing is incorrect. Obliged to book by phone, they also made a mistake so you are warned to recheck with the not very efficient operators.

Port Everglades terminal 1 resembles a refugee holding hall, giving the traveler a clue of what to expect. Doors are closed an hour pre departure. Parking next door to the terminal is $11- 24 hours.

Things don't improve on boarding. There are 2 bars, but the first class lounge one is always closed. The tourist area bar has only one server. resulting in long lines for service. Coffee machine broken - VERY limited drink and food selection. Take food and drink if you must travel.

Note the ferry travels to Grand Bahama, don't confuse it with Nassau ! The only place to go is Port Lucaya and casino which is a 30 min drive in a dirty ramshackle minibus at $5 per person each way. The island reminds one of Africa. The port is a small group of brightly painted shacks of restaurants bars and poorly stocked perfume shops. They offer Cuban cigars but not kept in humidor, so are dry unfit to smoke. Food is average but pricey.

The island has nothing to offer except beaches and expensive food and drink. The locals are friendly and pleasant.

“Not Worth It”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

We took the trip just this past weekend. Had to get up before dawn to get the bus to the ferry terminal, where we waited for a couple of hours. We then got on the boat. I had expected outside space, but there was none. The trip was very rocky on the way over. Over half the people got sick - they were passing out vomit bags for the passengers.

We arrived at about 1:30 PM at Port Lucaya, which, as noted in another review, is pretty dead without much to do. We boarded the bus at 5 PM to get back on the boat at 6 PM. Fortunately, the trip back was a little less rocky, although some people still got sick. It was very challenging to keep your balance when walking on the boat. I had expected a nice cruise experience to the Bahamas. This was not it!
