Although we booked directly on Starwood's webpage and got a confirmation Email on the day of our arrival our resevation was gone when we arrived. No big deal, since the hotel was not completely booked, however we almost spent 30 minutes at the front desk.
Upon arrival we realised right away that in this area there is a lot of high-rise construction going on (which you just can't see on the hotels webpage just like the four-lane road between hotel and beach...) and made sure that our room is not on the "wrong-side". So, ask for a quiet room. We did so and really heard nothing from the constructionside.
The kitchen in the room is large enough to cook for a party of four and all the necessary silver, plates etc. are available and were as clean as you would expect it.
The bathroom with a separate shower and bathtub is large and the amenities are of high quality (Gilchrist & Soames).
Cable-LAN is available in the room, some areas also offer WLAN.
The fitness-center is small but the equipment (5 cardio-machines) and weigh-lifting areas are well maintained. The pool is small but clean and rarely used so that you most-times find some space to relax.
The staff is average: some are very helpful and kind, whereas others seem to be new and less caring. Always an annoyance are the high fees for parking but that is probably something you have to stand.
The beach is clean (although not managed by the hotel) and the water-taxi-stop in a wlaking distance (10-15 minutes) so that you can easily reach Las Olas.
So, is this a four star / five star property ? Yes, it is definetly four star: the rooms are well maintained, clean and have a very nice decor of dark woods with light colored walls and carpets. The marble bathroom is large and the kitchen superd. Public areas are also nice and in a modern decor. This place definetly benefits from its -relatively- small size and that it is a little further away from Ft. Lauderdales "Las Olas-Boulevard (10-15 min by car). It is therefore quieter than the larger places in the area. Is it five star ? I don't think so since the hotel sometimes lacks the extra twist to be five star. I would say that it is between 4 and 5 star and testing -rate-wise- the limits.
