Let me start with I loved the airport - it is so organized that it was a wonderful experience! I flew into Ft. Lauderdale, p/u my bags immediately then took the shuttle to the car rentals - p/u the car and drove right out. The next day when i had to pick up my fiance there was no confusion whatsoever at the airport in or out - big contrast to Philly or NY!
Okay, the hotel is right across from the beach and on the main strip which is nice. I had a difficult time finding the hotel though because it onlly has a small sign on the corner of the building (on the side of the bar) until you get behind the hotel and see the sign for the parking garage. Once you get to the hotel if you are planning on staying on the main strip and the beach you probably could walk everywhere. I rented a car though because I was planning on a bit of site seeing off the strip.
The appearance of the suite was very nice. It was what I expected based upon the pics on line but there were a few disappointments. The jacuzzi tub had a ring and a used/dirty bar of soap in the bottom - I didn't make a big deal about it thinking maid service would clean it the next day. After not getting new towels or the bed fixed for 2 days I called to find out why - maid service is an additional fee - I was not made aware of this prior to my stay. When this was explained to me I figured okay, I was only there for a week I could go without maid service but I had to call down daily for fresh towels. Each morning at 7am I would call and request that clean towels be delivered to my room - when I would return about 8pm they still were not there and I had to call a 2nd time. This went on until about my 6th day there - it must have finally clicked because after my 7am request we there without the 2nd request.
Parking - they have a parking garage, but again, you have to pay extra to park at the hotel - I really think that if I am paying daily to stay at the hotel that my parking should be included. The first 3 levels of the parking garage are open for the public and it seems that the hotel is trying to make some extra bucks because it looks like they reworked the traffic flow to fit in about 6 extra spaces on each level - it is very tight so make sure you watch the oncoming cars at the "bends" because there is only room for 1 car at a time. The upper 2 levels are reserved for hotel guests and while still tight there was no lack of spaces.
Okay, enuf of the hotel - There is a little German restaurant a few blocks from the hotel (walking distance) in an alley between hotels that had wonderful food & beer. The cigar shop in the hotel plaza was very nice and the salesman was incredibly helpful and knowlegable. Sloppy Joes at the hotel complex was good but it a little pricey - lunch for 2 of us was almost $50 - maybe it was just a fluke though because it was the highest bill I had and we ate there 3 times. The Irish Pub was good too.
If you are able, do not miss the Packard Car Museum in Ft. Lauderdale - it is wonderful (and I am not a car nut by any means). The owner & his wife still visit daily - such a cute little couple in thier 80-90's....
Another thing you definitely want to see is Vizcaya - located 1 mile outside of Miami - ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!
We tried to find the Coral Castle - spent almost 2 hours looking for it before we gave up - then when we drove to KeyWest the next day we drove right past it but didn't stop - its a 3 hour drive to Key West! If make it this far south, you absolutley have to try the Frozen Key Lime Pie on a Stick - YUUUUUUMMMMMoh!!! I'm lactose intolerant so it was a great sub for ice cream in the heat.
Also, on the way to Key West - be sure to stop in at the Green Turtle Inn on Islamorado - the food & service were wonderful! On our way back we stopped at Whale Harbor Buffet - over priced and your local chineese buffet is probably better!
Miami and South Beach were interesting to say the least! Many interesting people to be seen - including a man in South Beach roller blading down the main strip between traffic dressed in a loin cloth, perfectly tanned with 0% body fat and feathers steaming off of him - wish I could have gotten a pic but it happened too fast!
On the way back from Miami we found a wonderful little marina/park on Biscayne Bay just off of Old Cutler Rd. They had a private little bay area for kids to swim that was blocked off from the ocean all the way around. It was quite lovely.
We went to the Miami Seaqaurium and had a nice day there - it is small and quaint but they have a show that starts about every 25 minutes so you can travel from show to show and see most of the park in a few hours. (This is where they used to film Flipper).
We also went to Pompano to fish and did a charter on the Helen S - we had a great time. Experienced an electrical storm while on the water - in Jersey we head for shore when a storm comes up - down there they fish right through it - so that was a little wild!
We also did a 1 day cruise to the Bahamas but I wrote a seperate review of that!
Hope this helps when you are planning your trip!!
