Recently returned from a wonderful stay at the Pillars. I usually stay at the Bentley Beach Hotel in South Beach but had trouble finding a room as some conference or the other had booked out all the good spots, so I opted for Ft. Lauderdale. Usually Ft. Laud. hotels are very standard, not nice at all, so I was sooooo... relieved when I arrived at the Pillars and felt like I had found what may very well be, one of the nicest hotels in all of Ft. Lauderdale. I have stayed in hotels across the world, some of the best, world renowned hotels, the W in New York, The 4 Seasons in Dublin-Ireland, Golden Eye in Jamaica, Las Ventanas in Cabo, the Metropolitan in London-UK just to name a few....each has its merits, some had lousy staff, but fantastic rooms, some had awful rooms but delicious food, others made up for the everything else that was lacking, just with the wonderful staff & service.
The Pillars' location is wonderful, you are minutes away from the beach (walking), and you can drive for 5-7mins to enjoy the boutiques and restaurants on Las Olas Blvd. I had a massage and a manicure & pedicure whilst there, which the hotel offers, though they don't actually have a spa, you have the services in your own room, or wherever you like, either by the pool or the pier overlooking the bay. You must request the services a day in advance. The hotel is just lovely and quaint. I do agree that the rooms are a bit small, but that should not discourage you, as they are beautifully furnished in the Tommy Bahama style, not over the top tropical, thank God. I also upgraded to a suite as my fiance was coming to meet me there, and they only had one suite available, as the rest were occupied, I think it was Rm 17. If that is all they have, then I suggest you pass, there isn't much difference from the standard room. BUT, if you do have other options (as we did a day later) then do book a suite (we had Rm 25) which is a nice size with the bedroom separated from the living room, two bathrooms (well needed, as the bathrooms are very small), and for added measure all couches in the suites have a sleeper couch (very convenient), a microwave, sink and a small fridge. All rooms have a mini bar.
Ok, so in off-season there isn't any real room service, just a continental breakfast and sandwiches offered during the day. I believe they also have a soup and a quiche and some salad selections available, which was fine for me. I usually had the fruit plate which was absolutely delicious and a good size, with a capuccino. However if you are one for a big breakfast there are loads of restaurants that the staff can recommend (the staff are all very helpful, in particular Tom or was it Ted?). Try 'the Floridian' diner on Las Olas Blvd. It looks dingy but the food is delish!!! There are also delivery services for a number of restaurants in the area, some fine dining, some burger and pizza, the hotel can provide suggestions and some menus...my point is, you have a choice.
Hotel Parking is absolutely free!!! A big plus for me. Just 23 rooms, so you won't ever feel like you are bombarded by a barage of guests. It is just very peaceful, I felt like I was in my own back yard, or a home away from home. The staff as I mentioned were very pleasant, that's an understatement! They were wonderful, EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!! You may feel almost like you are alone there because there's no real front desk, just a small desk in a living room like/ lobby area, and there's hardly ever anyone sitting at the desk. But this is cool as there is a phone there with a notice that says you can dial them when needed and since the managers work with a cordless phone always attached to them, they are always just a call/ steps away (usually in the office just off the lobby). There's a library with great books (if you're a reader) and movies. All available for you to take to your room. And if you're a shopper, there are loads of shops, including Saks and Nieman Marcus only 5 minutes away (driving).
I left the pillars with really wonderful memories, and an overall feeling of peace and harmony, and I was there for work!!! I truly feel like I found a gem, a hidden treasure, and YES I WILL RETURN,.....FOREVER!!!
PS. To all the staff, the owners etc...Thank you soo much for going out of the way to find the car service to get us to the airport. For helping us with all our luggage and baby carriage and bags upon bags of things, for the crib in our room and for putting up with our countless requests always with a smile. We really really really appreciate it and most of all thankyou for the wonderful stay! See you all when next we return...With love, Rebecca and family.
