Our stay at the Shubert was absolutely wonderful. We were greeted at the front desk by a man named Glen. He was very accomodating and showed true Southern charm throughout our stay. He was so down to earth that we felt welcome and at home immediately. The rooms were very large and clean with stylish accomadations. Maid service was very prompt and thorough. We experienced a large array of other travelers. Everyone was social and had a great time. No room for inhibitions. Many guest sunbathed and swam in the nude. Lots of nice eye candy The location is just minutes from all of the gay bars and the gay beach. There was a free continental breakfast each morning and complimentary beverage by the pool for happy hour. The entire resort is very well maintained. We were there in June and were heading back for more in July! This is a great gay resort with no attitude.

check-in registration is always fast and front desk staff are pleasant and genuinely interested in their guests and make sure you have an enjoyable stay. I have stayed here 5 times and never had a bad time. Sexual energy depends on the crowd but can be very hot at times. Every type can be found here from twinks, beefy muscle boys, thin, bears, old and young, Point I am trying to make is its for everyone, you won;t be out of place. Clothing optional but the guys you want to see naked keep their suits on during the day! Housekeeping doesn't bang on your door ignoring your "do not disturb sign" If it was a mistake the front desk helps you if you need towels, etc. The atmosphere is laid back so if you require 5star hotel attention, the Schybert is not for you. Rooms are fairly clean, especially compared to other gay hotels. People do, however, need to remember in Florida there are more bugs than some places in the US. It should be noted the only bugs I have ever seen are ants, and a baby gecko (I know not a bug but thought I'd mention anyway). Continental breakfast is what it says, although selection better than some other gay hotels I have stayed in. Unless you're very picky, you should enjoy yourself here. If you need total quiet to sleep don;t get a room near the hot tub, its open 24 hours and because of the set up of the windows, you will hear people talking if their still up and sometimes they forget people might be asleep.

Our Stay:
March 17 - 22, 2007

First, the good:
- Facilities are quite nice, clean
- Very helpful staff
- Room cleaned, towels and toiletries restocked every day
- Comfortable pool and hot tub (both heated)
- Fine location to dining (walk), beach (short drive), and other attractions (bars were also a drive)
- Everything worked swimmingly: A/C, fridge, shower water temp and pressure, TV, the wireless sometimes spotty - but they were quick to reset the connection and fix.
- Ample parking
- Charming place. Classic.

It's hard to make a "bad" list as we were quite happy with our short stay at the Schubert. The old windows let in a bit of noise and our online reservation suggested we'd have a King sized bed (we had two fulls instead) - but overall, we left happy vacationers.

My partner and I just returned home from a 4 nite stay at The Schubert --- and we had a wonderful time at this great gay men's resort. As other folks have mentioned, the staff is absolutely wonderful, accomodating, and go out of the way to make you feel welcome and well-taken care of. The rooms are great --- over 450 sq ft with new baths with walk-in showers. Completely remodeled with nice modern furniture. We had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the pool. The pool is not huge, but it is very nice, kept at a warm temp --- and there is also a nice hot tub. We met some freindly guys from all over the country. Most were all quite friendly and some cool friendships grew thru our short stay. Breakfast was better than average (FL has some unfortunate rules about hotels without food licenses serving only pre-packaged foods, so there are definitely some limitations). But there was cereal, yogurt, bananas, bagels, english mufs, juices, coffee, etc.

To be fair, it may not be as lushly landscaped as some of the other reosrts in town, and may need a little sprucing up here and there ---- but I'll take the attentive staff and nice amenities over the flora & fauna anytime. Check it out...

I stayed at the Schubert during November, pre-Thanksgiving which maybe explains a few of the disappointments.

I am always very careful not the judge accommodation in relation to weather and fellow guests as these are things over which guest house management have no control whatsoever.

The Schubert was extremely quiet during my stay and I suspect that this was the reason why so much maintenance work was being carried out. During my stay, vacant rooms were being redecorated, block paving was relaid, the sprinkler system was checked and on one day a company were in evidence to spray the foliage with pesticide.

I fully appreciate that this all made very good sense from a business perspective, but from a guest point of view this was not a great environment to be in as it meant retreating to the room on several occasions or at the very least having to move sun lounger on a number of occasions.

On a couple of occasions it was necessary to ask for toilet rolls or soap from the trolley after the room had been cleaned (which admittedly was provided with no problem), and I was desperately disappointed with the facilities in the kitchenette. There was a fridge and a microwave but little else. It was therefore very difficult to prepare any food as there was no cutlery, tableware or glassware. I understand that it is not advisable to have breakable plates, dishes and glasses in guest rooms, but these days there are some very acceptable and great quality plastic items available, which some of the other local guest houses do actually provide.

I did find the lack of a coffee maker very surprising. It is the first time in twelve years of visiting the United States that I have encountered accommodation without a coffee maker. One guest did complain about this and was told that the coffee makers had been removed from the rooms as guests were in the habit of making one cup in the morning and then leaving the machine on and expecting housekeeping to clean it. The guest who had complained did make the comment "Isn't this what we are paying you for?" Credit where it is due though and the member of staff on duty did locate a coffee maker from the store and brought it to the guests room.

That said, the Schubert is a nice enough place to stay with good sized suites which are cleaned to a high standard and very nice grounds. However, my expectation level was maybe too high having read other reviews on this site, as I have to confess that I did not really judge the Schubert to be any better than many of the other gay complexes I have stayed at in Fort Lauderdale.

All in all I have to say that I found the Schubert a very average place to stay in Fort Lauderdale. I know that the management at the Schubert, like all management in the hospitality sector, will welcome this feedback and will hopefully act upon a few of the comments (particularly with regard to the kitchenette facilites) which will indeed elevate the Schubert to a more impressive level.

  • Liked — Nice grounds and good location for shops and restaurants.
  • Disliked — Lack of equipment in the kitchenette area.
  • Tips/Secrets: — In all honesty there are better places in the area to spend your dollars or pounds.
